What I love about being new to Trek is I react to TOS like a time traveller having a panic attack. The future past did WHAT now?
The Klingons - Society (1982)
How I think Star Trek races represents our society
Federation: Idealized America/Western Culture. Planets have to meet a basic set of guidelines to be allowed in, mostly focusing on individual rights. Culture and autonomy of each planet is preserved as much as possible, as long as its inhabitants have A) developed warp drive, and B) Do not violate their civil rights. Different planets are akin to different states (again, idealized.)
Klingons: Russian, or more specifically, the USSR. Was pretty subtle until Undiscovered Country came along. They are a proud people and in wartime will throw everything they've got at any enemy. Usually ruled by a guy who mentions "the fatherland" a lot, and is not always the most honest individual.
Cardassian: Nazi Germany (again obviously). Rigid society, rather xenophobic, expansionist.
Bajorans: Judaism. Religious, oppressed by the Cardassian Germans, etc. these two don't really need to be explained.
Vulcans: Confuciust/Buddhist Asians. Logical, simple, peaceful people striving for universal harmony. Not the "friendliest" folk, but some of the most trustworthy.
Romulans: Imperialistic Chinese/Japanese. "Cousins" of the Vulcans, but have a decidedly different Culture. Again, highly Xenophobic.
Ferengi: Capitalism.
The Borg: represent a "culture of technology" that is not localized to one region/people. The Federation has amazing technology, but intentionally never removes the "Human" element from it. Though not necessary, their ships are run by people. It lacks the "elegance" of the Borg, and is often more cumbersome during precision maneuvers and computations. Though the Borg's lack of (pardon the term) soul, reminds us why Borg-style interconnectedness may not be a wholly good thing.
