Joos van Cleve - The Lamentation. Detail. 1524
I’m watching my favorite gamer’s walkthrough for South of Midnight and only 20 seconds into the opening…film adaptation! Turn this into a film!
My goodness it’s fantastic!
The music, the nod to Bruh (or) Br'er Rabbit, the imagery of Southern Black American culture with the bottle trees, talking ‘bout haints, the picture book featurette storytelling that looks Elizabeth Catlett-inspired, the claymation figures in the introduction.
I love it already!
(if there’s any Kouri-Vini spoken…!)
the Southern lore is so spot on! Extensive research was absolutely done right! My family’s Black American Southern roots are so carefully and mindfully represented so impeccably that I get a little teary!
The weaver’s healing abilities and what they do for people. That’s powerful. The weaver, Mahalia, representing Harriet Tubman guiding the family to their freedom (in the past realm but also present to guide Hazel). Acting as her guiding spirit.
Yall, Hazel is so cute! Her hair (the hair jewelry, the style — the zigzag split in the back), the eyebrow slit, the ear piercings & earring jewelry, her arm bands, her choker, the nose ring…!
(it’s a beautiful game. in all aspects)
