Words can’t even explain the way I’m feeling right now. I honestly had no idea we would have our film released on so many platforms, I was expecting maybe 2 platforms. Now I know it’s doesn’t automatically mean people will buy and rent our film, a lot of marketing has to happen, a lot of genuine outreach has to happen to ensure people want to see The Luring but at least our film has a chance. That’s all I ever wanted- a chance.
For any filmmakers looking to do their film reading this- How we raised money was we shot the hook, the first scene of our film and that was presented to investors. If we didn’t have skin in the game then why would any investor be expected to put their money in? Personally I am the type of person who doesn’t ask anyone to do anything I’m not willing to do myself. I put my whole life savings into The Luring because I believe so strongly people want to watch a film that has a good story and not a predictable plot. I want to watch a film that does things I’m not used to because nothing is worse then seeing something I’ve seen before and as a filmmaker I was not going to regurgitate someone else’s story. This is what our investors saw with not only the scene we shot but everything, from the lawyer we hired to the website, to the LLC we incorporated, etc. They saw Sandy and Brian also working hard to raise money as we three really felt passionate about telling this unique story. I can’t stress that enough. We put our money where our mouth is and that is the number one factor investors look for. They don’t understand the time it takes to write a script, they don’t care about the time it takes to do whatever, they care about the money a filmmaker is willing to put in- that’s the sacrifice they need to see in order for them to also contribute.
When I got the letter from our distribution company the list of all the platforms we’ll be playing on come June 16th I was and still am so pleasantly surprised. I can’t believe it. Again it gives me a chance to be different and to tell a story I want to be part of and I think about all the hard work everyone contributed throughout the process, it makes me so proud. Sandy, Brian and myself went out of our way to make sure our cast and crew were taken care of in all matters, we spent so much money on the catering for instance and to make sure it was healthy food with vegan options (I’m vegan) because we wanted our cast and crew to have long lasting energy and not crash and burn. Pizza and cheap food would not be acceptable. Yes it cost a lot but it was worth it.
It’s also a respect thing and a lot of hard work went into raising money to make sure everyone’s needs are met- making sure people had a comfortable place to sleep, not overwork the crew, made sure we had a clear vision and plan/schedule with a great AD who somehow was able to schedule a 22 days shoot with 15 days of consecutive days of rain and not once did we work past a full day. A lot of films don’t really care about their cast and crew and word gets around so it was important to make sure only good mentions would be associated with The Luring within the film community.
I’ve worked on some films where the filmmakers were selfish and didn’t respect the cast and crew. Not on this set. I know what’s its like to be disrespected and not treated fairly. I know what it’s like to work for someone who’s just in it for themselves and treat everyone like a throwaway. Being a leader means you have to first respect and understand you’re only as good as your team and leading by example is the best motivator. The people I respect as leaders are motivators not dictators. Lead with love and respect and be willing to do the heavy lifting because when your cast and crew see that they then understand we are all in this together.
So many emotions right now if you saw me at my desk wiring this. I just know this is our chance and I’m going to personally do my best to get noticed. That’s all I ever wanted.
To the cast and crew of The Luring I respect your hard work, I am so proud of you and think of you often. It’s been a long road but I hope we get the word out so The Luring becomes popular which will lead to all of us getting future work. The more eyeballs on our film means more people will go to the IMDB page and see who worked on it and that is more likely going to lead to more of us working in the future. This is really important to me. For some this was their first feature, this is my first narrative feature so I’m still learning but I’ll never forget why and who brought me here to this point. Film is a collaboration for sure. Bravo to all of you. Much love and respect.
