We are pleased to announce our remastered documentary "Romantic Realism The Art of Roderick A. Wells."
I just finished doing an interview on the "Whats Your Deal" Podcast with Scott Hall about my new show "Good Question" and I really enjoyed it. I always get nervous doing press but he made it easy to relax.
In episode 3 the questions we ask are- 1) How divided do you feel our country is right now? 2) Of all the politicians, who do you think would go after privatized prisons, Wall Street, end the wars, give us universal healthcare, expand social security and invest in green energy? 3) Are we better off providing welfare to help the poor or welfare to help corporations? How would you answer these questions? Do you agree or disagree? When you answer them are you answering them based on your party's allegiance or are you being completely objective?

Our poster for our film that has just been released on Amazon, YouTube Movies, Googleplay, etc. Check all the platforms on TheLuring.com
Some are saying The Luring is a disturbing but fun movie to watch. We love horror films that have a unique story that doesn’t rely in predictable jump scares.
The Luring is now available for digital download, streaming and DVD purchase. Watch it today!
If you're into twisted psychological thrillers that a lot of people are calling disturbing, you’ll like The Luring. Now available on a bunch of different platforms.
A man tries to recover a lost memory by returning to his family's Vermont vacation home where an unspeakable act took place leaving him institutionalized as a child.
Words can’t even explain the way I’m feeling right now. I honestly had no idea we would have our film released on so many platforms, I was expecting maybe 2 platforms. Now I know it’s doesn’t automatically mean people will buy and rent our film, a lot of marketing has to happen, a lot of genuine outreach has to happen to ensure people want to see The Luring but at least our film has a chance. That’s all I ever wanted- a chance.
For any filmmakers looking to do their film reading this- How we raised money was we shot the hook, the first scene of our film and that was presented to investors. If we didn’t have skin in the game then why would any investor be expected to put their money in? Personally I am the type of person who doesn’t ask anyone to do anything I’m not willing to do myself. I put my whole life savings into The Luring because I believe so strongly people want to watch a film that has a good story and not a predictable plot. I want to watch a film that does things I’m not used to because nothing is worse then seeing something I’ve seen before and as a filmmaker I was not going to regurgitate someone else’s story. This is what our investors saw with not only the scene we shot but everything, from the lawyer we hired to the website, to the LLC we incorporated, etc. They saw Sandy and Brian also working hard to raise money as we three really felt passionate about telling this unique story. I can’t stress that enough. We put our money where our mouth is and that is the number one factor investors look for. They don’t understand the time it takes to write a script, they don’t care about the time it takes to do whatever, they care about the money a filmmaker is willing to put in- that’s the sacrifice they need to see in order for them to also contribute.
When I got the letter from our distribution company the list of all the platforms we’ll be playing on come June 16th I was and still am so pleasantly surprised. I can’t believe it. Again it gives me a chance to be different and to tell a story I want to be part of and I think about all the hard work everyone contributed throughout the process, it makes me so proud. Sandy, Brian and myself went out of our way to make sure our cast and crew were taken care of in all matters, we spent so much money on the catering for instance and to make sure it was healthy food with vegan options (I’m vegan) because we wanted our cast and crew to have long lasting energy and not crash and burn. Pizza and cheap food would not be acceptable. Yes it cost a lot but it was worth it.
It’s also a respect thing and a lot of hard work went into raising money to make sure everyone’s needs are met- making sure people had a comfortable place to sleep, not overwork the crew, made sure we had a clear vision and plan/schedule with a great AD who somehow was able to schedule a 22 days shoot with 15 days of consecutive days of rain and not once did we work past a full day. A lot of films don’t really care about their cast and crew and word gets around so it was important to make sure only good mentions would be associated with The Luring within the film community.
I’ve worked on some films where the filmmakers were selfish and didn’t respect the cast and crew. Not on this set. I know what’s its like to be disrespected and not treated fairly. I know what it’s like to work for someone who’s just in it for themselves and treat everyone like a throwaway. Being a leader means you have to first respect and understand you’re only as good as your team and leading by example is the best motivator. The people I respect as leaders are motivators not dictators. Lead with love and respect and be willing to do the heavy lifting because when your cast and crew see that they then understand we are all in this together.
So many emotions right now if you saw me at my desk wiring this. I just know this is our chance and I’m going to personally do my best to get noticed. That’s all I ever wanted.
To the cast and crew of The Luring I respect your hard work, I am so proud of you and think of you often. It’s been a long road but I hope we get the word out so The Luring becomes popular which will lead to all of us getting future work. The more eyeballs on our film means more people will go to the IMDB page and see who worked on it and that is more likely going to lead to more of us working in the future. This is really important to me. For some this was their first feature, this is my first narrative feature so I’m still learning but I’ll never forget why and who brought me here to this point. Film is a collaboration for sure. Bravo to all of you. Much love and respect.
How to Keep Your Deadline as a Writer Even in Quarantine
A neat little trick on how to meet a deadline is to first have a deadline. Wait what?
Being in quarantine sucks for so many reasons, the government is giving away trillions of our tax dollars to Wall Street while they say they don’t have enough for universal healthcare, unemployment is at an all time high, we can’t visit loved ones- but at least you can write. You can escape into whatever world you create and once we come out of this pit of despair you’ll have something to show for it.
So, the deadline. When I was writing ”The Luring” I had to wear many hats, from casting, to producing, managing the website and social media, etc.. I also had to write a script and since the house we were going to shoot in was for sale, we had an unavoidable deadline that was quickly approaching. It surely put pressure on me but we creatives thrive under deadlines, even though we go kicking and screaming having that looming date creates order which is necessary.
So how did I create deadlines that actually work?
When you’re writing a script it’s easy to get distracted but if you tell someone “I’ll have something for you to read by the end of the week” you just created a deadline.
Using your friends as a readers is a trick when writing isn’t your job but you still want to write something that could one day be something other than a word doc on your computer. It has to be real and it has to get finished for anything to happen and without deadlines it wont get done.
Having a reader keeps you on track because you know their time is valuable and they are doing you a favor. When someone agrees to read your script that’s a big responsibility and you being a non-asshole respects your friend and their time so you’ll honor your end of the exchange and that’s giving it to them when promised.
In return you’ll also get feedback that will enable you to reach future deadlines because now you have another pair of eyeballs rooting for you to fix whatever problems that arose. They will see things you missed which gives you the spotlight to make that change because it’s identified.
Meeting the deadline pressures you to figure things out because it’s far different to read it by yourself than stating it knowing someone else is going to be able to critique it. If they don’t “get" your story then you need to fix that and it all starts by sending it to them at the end of the week. They can’t read what they don’t have and you can’t write without that reader. Yes this is torture but it also saves us from the shackles we put on ourselves when we assume we can do this alone. We all need a push and we all have friends who want us to succeed and are willing to read what we came up with. Shit, they’re in quarantine too so you’re giving them an escape and an interesting topic to talk about so it’s a win win for both.
Even when I was writing my weird short film “Quarantine Sunscreen” I used a friend who read my first draft to see if it was funny and to also pump up the social commentary aspect of the script. So this applies to all scripts, feature and shorts. Even though this particular short was really just me being an artist so I was my own deadline I knew I had to use my friend to keep me on track so I could keep my sanity during this pandemic. Yes staying active in your creative endeavors will keep you sane but that’s a whole other topic but trust me, it works.
So turn off your social media, your phone, whatever distracts you and write. Tell a friend you’ll have something for them to read and you’ll be surprised how quickly you’ll be patting your self on the back with the feeling of accomplishment.
High-five!

While working on the score for my film #TheLuring I would take breaks and play tug the tennis ball with Lu Lu who always won because she’s so damn cute. It’s these moments that make me happy, working on a project I love and passionate about and playing with a dog who’s eyes make me smile so big I tear up. #dog #studio #composing #cute #film #indiefilm #funny
