SVA Computer Art Supports The Memory Project
The Memory Project is a nonprofit organization that invites art teachers and their students to create portraits for youth around the world who have faced substantial challenges, such as neglect, abuse, loss of parents, and extreme poverty. Karis Oh (BFA 2016) started working on portraits for The Memory Project when she was in high school and introduced the project to the SVA Computer Art Department.
This year, Deepa Paulus (BFA 2018), started The Memory Project Club. Deepa Paulas shares, "I wanted to bring The Memory Project to SVA as a way to give back to others with art. We are so blessed to be studying what we love to do, so it is really important to use our abilities to help others."
Each student in the club has received a photograph of a child from Ethiopia and created a portrait for them using a variety of mediums.
A member of The Memory Project Club shares, “I've produced so much art over the years for myself. Even being in SVA, the whole process of applying and all the pieces I've manufactured to get accepted was all for myself and my own education. Otherwise, if I ever made something, whether it be a commission or a gift, I would expect some monetary or material exchange. Since the first mark I made on the page, creating a portrait for somebody who I've never met has already given me something in return, the therapeutic liberation of knowing I am doing a good thing. "I joined the Memory Project to be more in touch with my emotions and to bring happiness to somebody who has experienced more hardships than I could fathom."
The Memory Project has created over 80,000 portraits for children around the world. If you are interested in donating or creating a portrait, please visit their website, memoryproject.org
