if they weren’t books for students to look at why not keep it in some other section of the castle

or were they not for first years and for older students or something?? i can’t really remember the details

Something about the star trek au: Magnus's tricorder will sometimes just randomly beep. It's otherwise fully functional, it just beeps for no reason every once in a while. People start joking that it's somehow trying to talk to magnus, and start to refer to it almost like a secret member of the crew. Eventually, magnus starts calling it "jack" as a goof, like if it beeps while Alex is talking he'll say "thank you for the input, Jack, but I think it's a little rude to interrupt the captain" or something like that, to continue the "Magnus's tricorder is actually talking" joke Except then he starts calling it jack all the time "nurse, could you hand me jack?" "I think I lost Jack, you guys" "I'll use jack to give you a quick scan, just to see what's wrong" And some people make fun of him, but then they realize they're doing it too. Everyone is calling the doctor's tricorder by first name, sometimes even speaking directly to it- normally as a joke, but sometimes they aren't completely sure, because it might just be personification, but it almost seems like the damn thing really does have a mind of its own
