Calvino does this fascinating thing in the Our Ancestors trilogy where the plot the book appears to be building to is resolved quickly and with little ceremony, and the setup was the point. The climax of any chivalric romance would be the rescue of the maiden, but in The Nonexistent Knight, he squeezes most of Agilulf’s journey and the rescue into a 9 page chapter. The culmination of Cosimo’s love for Viola is a rekindling and intense love, but then ended by misunderstandings. More weight is put on his vanishing into the clouds than what would be the climax in anything else. The duel between the good half and bad half of Medardo in The Cloven Viscount barely lasts half a page, and I think it’s so interesting how he eschews this formality of literature in order to put emphasis on what came before and the seemingly unimportant in the story.
