The film passed Italian censors on July 23, 1980.
The Other Hell was distributed in Italy on 22 January 1981.
Mattei spoke about being influenced by what he described as "Argento's concepts" on the film but that the film was not "an absolute copy of Inferno".
According to Rome's Public Cinematographic Register, filming began on October 23, 1979, and continued through October and November when very little about Argento's film was known except its title and some stills from the set.
It was given a belated limited theatrical run in the United States as Guardian of Hell by Film Concept Group on 13 September 1985.
The film has been released on home video by Vestron Home Video as The Other Hell with an 88-minute running time

The Other Hell (1981)
One of this week’s films was The Other Hell, a late entry in the Italian nunsploitation boom. It was written and directed by Bruno Mattei (who's wikipedia entry proudly lists him as the director of exploitation films in many genres, including women in prison, nunsploitation, zombie, mondo, cannibal, and Nazisploitation films) and Claudio Fragasso (who went on to direct Troll 2 in 1989).
With that kind of talent behind the camera, what could possibly go wrong?
The film follows a priest’s investigation into a convent where strange deaths have been occuring.
The priest doesn’t really investigate much (and gets replaced by a hip young priest who believes in psychoanalysis instead of excorcism). The older priest entirely misses that there’s a weird embalming/murder room in the crypt. The younger priest weirdly finds the murder room and then casually shuts the door and pretends there’s nothing to see here.
The film is only 88 minutes long but I swear I watched it for three days and three nights and was still twenty minutes from the ending. It’s unbelievably boring. I think it used the same jump scare five times. So yeah...I’ll admit I turned this off after an hour of its hour and a half run time.
I guess I’ll just never know if the old priest was eaten by the young as is right and proper.
