Once Upon a Time in the West is such a weird, wonderful, difficult western that really shows what the genre can do. It's full of these long, silent, almost motionless scenes which are then punctuated by quick flashes of intense violence. Apparently the director, Sergio Leone, wanted to explore the "rituals" of violence - the before and after of people knowing it's about to happen or in the immediate aftermath. It makes for an odd western because all the gunfights feel so meaningless and yet so laden with the finality of death. A sort of anti-western in a way.

Oh, and Dario Argento helped Leone develop his ideas for the film.

And Henry Fonda turned up to set with brown contact lenses because he's playing a villain and Leone was like no we specifically want those famous big blue eyes on the cold-hearted killer.

I have instituted a New Rule for myself.

Every time I feel the urge to get in a pointless internet argument, I instead go to Wikipedia and make a page for one of the Nancy Drew books that does not currently have its own page.

It's about as time-consuming, adds to the sum total of human knowledge rather than subtracting from it, and has the added bonus of not giving me a migraine.
