The Owling: A bonus scene!
hey guys, so I saw this picture
And was thinking about Metis and Athena and the brilliant and lovely @mer-acle inspired me to write a scene for it and I did. It's following all the canon from The Owling storyline I just didn't know where to put it.
The Owling pt22
Hestia looked across her desk to see a pair of little hands grab the edge, followed by two pigtails then a pair of golden eyes
"Auntie Hestia?" Athena asked standing on her tippy toes on the plank that connected the legs of Hestia's desk.
"Yes, munchkin," Hestia replied warmly as her heart screamed from the cuteness.
"Can I ask you a question?"
"Sure," Hestia said, "Come here, munchkin."
Athena scampered over to Hestia who put her on her lap
"What do you wanna know, my little genius," Hestia said giving her adorable niece a kiss on the head.
Athena hesitated a moment fidgeting with her pigtails before peering up at her aunt.
"How do you be a good big sister?"
"Well -"
"Wait -
Athena climbed down ran across the room to where she left her pen and papyrus then ran back over. Hestia lifted her up onto her lap again and Athena unrolled her scroll, titled it as quickly as she could, biting her lip in concentration. Then looked up at Hestia.
"I'm ready!"
Posiedon was exhausted from his trip to Olympus. His siblings tended to do that to him. Plus there was the whole issue of the Metis and her adorable daughter. Poor girl is probably so sad and scared, Poseidon thought. He had loved his cousin, sure she was a bit of a know-it-all times, Poseidon thought fondly but she had taught him a lot about his domain and she was the precious sister of his wife and other Oceanid cousins. All Poseidon wanted was to curl up with his wife even though he wasn't sure what to tell her about their niece. Zeus's introduction of her was designed to emphasize that her maternal origin was not to be questioned. Then again what was said in his bedroom never left the chamber. Poseidon doubted he'd be taken as seriously if anyone but his wife saw him that vulnerable. Unfortunately, his wife decided now was a great time to have their rascal granddaughters and little brat of a son over.
"Move," Poeseidon told Pallas who was sitting on his wife's lap.
"Poseid - !" Amphitrite began to scold.
" - No!" Pallas shouted curling into her grandmother who wrapped her arms around her.
"You women are conspiring against me," Poseidon said only half serious and actually slightly amused.
"Husband. Stop acting like a child, and leave the actual child alone," Amphitrite scolded.
"But that's my spot. She's sitting right where my head is supposed to go," Poseidon retorted.
"Come on, Pallas, listen to your king," Triton chimed in.
"It's not fair! He gets to spend all night with grandma! I've only been here for half an hour," Pallas whined.
"Fine, we'll share," Poseidon said as he picked up both his wife and granddaughter and placed Amphitrite on his own lap. Poseidon kissed his wife which caused Pallas to make a disgusted face and finally get off her grandma's lap.
"Wait, Pallas," Poseidon called out to his granddaughter, as she ran off, "How old are you again?"
Poseidon reached his hand out trying to assess how tall she was.
"She's four, do you not remember her birthday a couple months ago?!" Amphitrite said.
"I have a lot of things to remember. Like this meeting we had up there."
Amphitrite caught the concern in his voice, a hint of melancholy.
"Come on my precious princesses, it's time for bed," Amphitrite said, getting off her husbands lap and playfully grabbing Pallas and spinning her upside down.
"What happened on Mount Olympus, dad?" Triton asked after giving his mom and daughters kisses on the cheek.
Poseidon didn't respond. Just drank his wine.
"Oh, come on, dad!" Triton said, "I'm a grown adult! Fates, I have three children myself!"
Poseidon laughed. Tired but genuine. He did respect his son, he had grown into a wonderful young man and ruler and father. Sometimes Poseidon couldn't believe what he had produced. Then again Triton was half Amphitrite's.
"That doesn't stop you from whining from excessive curiosity," Poseidon said booping his son on the nose.
"You're not gonna tell me the news. This is of importance to the realm . . . And . . you seem kinda upset," Triton responded, " What happened up there?"
Poseidon sighed as his son got into his line of sight with those seal eyes. Really pulling out all the stops he is, Poseidon thought fondly as his son coupled a logical argument with a childish tactic. It worked though.
"You have a cousin."
"Zeus had a kid."
"Yep."
"It was really only a matter of time if we're honest."
"Yeah."
"So who is the mother?"
Poseidon put down his glass
"That's where it gets complicated," Poseidon said, "The way Zeus announced her it is clear we are not ask about her maternal origin."
"But . . . there's more to it than that."
"You're very clever, son."
"Clever enough to wonder why you're stalling."
"What I'm about to say must not go beyond these walls, is that understood?"
"Of course."
"Because he may be your uncle but he is not to be crossed. He can and will hurt you."
"I understand, dad. I have three daughter I love very much. I'm not about to leave them fatherless. Trust me, my self-preservation is strong."
"The girl . . . resembles . . the first queen of Olympus. She resembles Metis. And . . I'd say considering the resemblance and the girls age, it's logical to assume that she's Metis's daughter."
"How do you spend time with a baby, they can't talk or walk?" Athena asked her aunt, looking up from the list she was making on "How to be a good big sister."
"Mostly you hold them a lot and bounce them."
"Spin them around?"
"That too. Also just singing and talking to them, it helps them learn to talk eventually."
"Can I talk to them about owls?"
"Yes, about anything you want."
Athena scribbled down the words "Owls," "Pegasi," and "ocean."
"Okay, what else?" Athena said giving Hestia her full attention, eyes wide as if expanding to make space for more information.
"Well, when they get older you'll probably play and talk to them more so it's important to be patient and understand that sometimes they have big feelings of feelings that are different than yours. The world can seem very intense when you're young and it's important not to forget that as you get older."
Hestia held a finger to her lips and motioned for Hera to follow her, a bright smile on her face. The door was cracked but Hera could hear Athena's voice coming through it.
"You will never vanquish me! Pew! Pew!" Athena said in a deep voice, throwing a couple beads at the other doll. She had built a fortress out of of bowls and beads and other crafting items Hestia had. She knocked over the second doll and ran back to the first one.
"You will die. No one will defeat me!" Athena said continuing the villains monologue. She then leaned the doll again the tower and ran back around to the second doll. She made the doll climb to her feet in a dramatically slow and painful struggle despite it only being made of cloth.
"Maybe. Maybe not today, maybe not ever! But if I can knock you out long enough to kiss my beautiful wife then I will!" Athena said voicing the Heroine.
"Aww -" Hera started to say but Hestia covered her mouth and pulled her to the side away from the door frame. Staring at each other they both found it hard not laugh
"We mustn't laugh, she'll feel ashamed," Hera said as she and Hestia moved away from the door.
"I know. We shouldn't have spied on her but it was just too cute, I had to show you."
