What is the mitochondria?
the mitochondria is an organelle found in all eukaryotic cells (plant, animal).
it used to be its own bacteria, but around 60-56 mya, a larger organism swallowed but did not digest the mitochondria, making them work as one. as such, the mitochondria has its own dna (called mitochondrial dna, it can be used to trace back mothers up until the very first mother in africa) and since it technically has its own proteins, when a cell dies via unnatural methods and bursts open, the immune systrem recognizes the mitochondria as foreign and realizes something is wrong
it's main function is cellular respiration, the process of turning glucose and water into the chemical adenosine triphosphate-- the main energy source of cells. when the phosphorus bonds in atp are broken, the released energy from the cleavage provides energy to every cell with a nucleus
