I just spent the afternoon reading (okay, some skimming, but mostly reading)The Paleo Solutionby Robb Wolf.
Wow. It made me laugh, it made me think, and it made me pull out the results of the blood work I had done back in February.
Verdict? It's not as good as it could be! I thought I was all good with a total cholesterol of 147 (back when I was a vegetarian binge eater, struggling with major sugar addiction), but apparently that number could be lower, say between 120 and 140. My LDL and HDL levels seemed to be in line, but who knows what type of LDL I have; my results don't make it clear.
My triglycerides were also great, somewhere right around 50, but two other markers he mentions were not great! Both my A1c and C-reactive protein were a tad on the high side (A1c was 5.7 and should be under 5, according to Robb, and my CRP was 1.6, when it should be 1 or below). This is interesting, since my doctor said my numbers were good (this was my first visit with her and I was NOT impressed; but we've moved out of the area and I will definitely never see her again).
Don't get me wrong, as far as the standard American goes, my numbers are pretty darn impressive, but any question that I've had about if I've made a stupid move going from vegetarian to paleo were pretty much answered when I read that information.
I am 100% committing to the paleo diet and I look forward to finding out how my numbers compare next year.
In addition to that info, reading the book made me realize I do want to recommit to no dairy, very little fruit, and limited alcohol, at least until I reach a leaner stature. I clearly have body fat to lose, and Robb says cut the fruit to achieve that, and I believe him. I also know that although I enjoy dairy, it does make my nose stuffier and/or runnier, so it must be doing something not great to my body.
Wine is...something I enjoy. I'll most likely have a glass tonight and have a glass or two when I'm home visiting my parents next week, but after that I'm tightening the reins in order to get down to a better body fat range for me.
Notice I didn't say weight, but body fat range?? I may keep weighing myself every four weeks, but I know that it's the way I look and my measurements that will really tell me if I'm making the types of changes I'm striving for.
I only have one obstacle right now. My family has no idea I've changed the way I eat. They have known me as a vegetarian for nearly two decades. And this change isn't just about adding meat back into my diet, it's about eliminating a whole bunch of other stuff! I suppose I should just tell them before I get there so it's not weird, but for some reason I tend to be secretive about these things, and that will just make it harder on me.
Goal: mention these dietary changes to my mom before I go home, so sometime in the next few days, so that I don't deal with awkwardness when I get there, or worse, end up eating cheese pizza and bean burritos while I'm there just to avoid having the conversation.
