Yeah, it’s just a question of fixing a tank that hasn’t moved for five years or so and driving it to neutral ground so the carabinieri can find it without involving anyone else. What could go wrong?

For the record, Peppone really is the best blacksmith/mechanic for miles around. And honestly, even though Don Camillo’s line about knowing forward and reverse on a tank isn’t in the book/films, I wouldn’t put it past him. The guy swiped two submachine guns from Peppone’s stash and he keeps a .81 mortar hidden somewhere “just in case”. Whatever he and Peppone’s men did during the German occupation of Northern Italy definitely wasn’t limited to saying masses for the dead...

“The Panzer”, Don Camillo And His Flock (Italian and French versions), 1/?

This is one of my favourites (I have a lot of those) Don Camillo stories and I couldn’t find an English translation anywhere, so I thought I’d try my hand at a comics adaptation. The dialogue is a little different (mostly to fit in the speech bubbles) but the gist is the same. Also it lacks a title page, but knowing myself, it’ll probably be the very last thing I do.

I think I’ll do the colours later, but for the moment I kind of like the start? If I had any doubt before about the necessity of other people doing the lettering, I no longer have - this was maybe the thing that took me longest to do.

(The car is an anachronism, since this is set circa 1950 and the Fiat 600 was first produced in 1955; I needed a small, inexpensive car for reference (and botched it anyway). Sorry, Fiat experts.)
