Proverbs 17:27
"A man of knowledge uses words with restraint, and a man of understanding is even-tempered"
The two words in this passage that should be emphasized are "knowledge" and "understanding."
First, the dictionary describes knowledge as, "power of knowing; awareness, as of a fact or circumstance." The Book of James speaks of using a bit in a horse’s mouth to guide the large body of the animal and how a ship is pushed by forceful winds, but its the small rudder the pilot uses to steer the large vessel. "Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things" (James 3: 3-5). The Word also states, "Let no corrupt words proceed out of your mouth but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impact grace to the hearers" (Eph. 4:29). We must be aware of the things we speak to others simply because the tongue has power to bring life or death (Prov. 18:21). Once we begin to fear the Lord (that is reverent obedience expressed in submission to Him), it is then that we obtain knowledge and instruction from Him (Prov. 1:7).
Secondly, understanding is defined as, "wisdom; superior power of discernment." I feel there is a deeper revelation with this part of the passage. It's not just saying a person has a better understanding of a current situation or circumstance, but also has an understanding and has obtained wisdom of who he or she serves as a child of the most high God. When we are aware of the peace and love that our Father provides when we diligently seek Him, it is then that we are able to cast ALL our cares on Him (1 Peter 5:7). This will then result in a calmer spirit. Our body language, tone of voice and other means of communication are noticeably different. We are not worried about how bills are going to get paid, how much food is in the fridge, what hurtful comments someone said about you, and we are not moved by the diagnosis the doctor gave us!! YES! Hallelujah! We are aware that we are the children of the King and it's our crazy FAITH in Him that keeps us calm during the storm!
"When wisdom enters your heart, and knowledge is pleasant to your soul, discretion will preserve you; understanding will keep you" (Prov. 2:10-11).
As believers our method of communication must and should be presented through the fruit of the spirit (Gal. 5:22-23) in order to convey the message of salvation effectively. Don't expect your testimony to be planted in another person's soil when you turn right around and complain about what Suzie Q. or John Smith is doing at work to tick you off. Allow the Holy Spirit to guide your mind, spirit and most importantly, your tongue so that you are able to "THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK!"
