Flip Grater | ‘The Quit’

Flip Grater - The Quit.
Today’s happy moment, well one of em anyway: Listening to songs that almost make me cry… Sounds like a weird thing to be happy about I suppose, but I do love music that moves you. ♥
I'm quitting my life cold turkey, It's the only way out for a junkie like me To finally be free
A conversation.
Remember the time you were riding your bike and you fell and I got a giant lump shaped like a light bulb?
Yes.
I never complained.
No you are good that way. Reliable too. Hardly ever get achy.
Well it helps that you don’t play Tennis.
I tried once but I was terrible.
You were. To be fair you were on roller skates the one time you tried.
That’s right. Grandma was so annoyed.
She was always annoyed.
So I don’t like to be pushy but the lungs are talking to me and er Heart and legs.
Yeah. Do we have to talk about that right now?
Listen if I can’t talk to you, honestly, who can? I’m the right elbow. I know stuff.
But I just want to
Hey don’t light that thing. Just wait. You are quitting. You just have to. Lungs want to do a good job, they are trying and it’s just not fair. Heart is getting tired of it. Heart is barely speaking to me.
Heart has always been a bit melodramatic. That murmur. The prolapsed valve. The racing for no good reason. Chest pains, always with the chest pains.
Well it’s a good strong heart. Look at what you’ve put it through. Not enough sleep- ever. Cigarettes. Adrenaline. Grief avoidance. That all takes a toll.
Elbow lets not talk about grief avoidance.
What do you want to talk about.
Writing. I want to talk about writing. Maybe baseball. Remember those games when I was little? At Candlestick Park when it was still Candlestick Park. The fog and the cold and the Giants? The sound of that thwack bat crack when a ball was about to sail far away and forever and it was a home run and the people all cheered?
I remember. I love that song.
Take me out the the ball game.
Yes that one. Buy me some peanuts and cracker jacks.
I always did like cracker jacks.
I don’t care if I never get back. Is that how it goes? Even then you were a runner. You thought about that line in the song. The not caring. The idea of disappearing in the park. Sleeping in the dugout. Riding the cable car all day long. Learning to pick pockets like Oliver Twist.
Yeah. I always was a runner I just never went.
Sure you did. You left all the time you just came back before
Before she could figure out I’d left.
Yes.
This is a downer. So elbow. Do you ever get restless?
God yes. I get tired of looking after everything in here. I’d love to able to run. Or do things like hands do. Hands have all the fun.
Well not all of the fun. Elbow. Your blushing.
Back to the smoking.
I’m working on it.
I know you are but you have to work harder. No more back sliding.
I’m talking to you right now. I only had one.
Yes. It’s time to set a date.
I know.
Why am I so terrified? It’s not like I haven’t done it before.
I think your scared because your going to be successful this time. It’s the last quit for you. Success is scary. And it means saying goodbye to cigarettes forever.
Shit. I think you are right.
I am always right.
Well not about movies. You pick the strangest movies.
You liked Talladega nights. Ricky Bobby.
That was a funny movie.
But explain your love of Ishtar.
I’m not discussing it. You loved it too. You just don’t talk about it because people will laugh at you.
Elbow.
What.
I’m going to light cigarette number two now. All my nerves are peeled back and screaming.
Tell me about it. Try listening to that noise on the inside.
Good talk Elbow.
Good talk. I’m serious about the smoking. Legs have filed a formal complaint. They need circulation to work right and you don’t want blood clots or dying feet.
Jesus. No I don’t. You are really freaking me out.
Good. It’s what I came to do.
Who knew you could be so serious Elbow.
Serious as fucking death. That’s me. But I have a softer gentler side. People don’t know that about me.
I’m going now Elbow.
Are you really going to show this to people?
I am.
Because you write.
Because I write.
See that determination? It’s like a muscle. Apply it to the quitting.
I will. Hey Elbow.
What.
Thanks.
No problem.

Ciggarette number three
Still delicious. I wanted the third one less than the first. Reason for smoking. I didn't kill my fucking cat when he woke me up by jumping on and off my stomach at 5:10, 5:15 or 5:30. Number four was supposed to just sit in my mouth unlit. Like Baretta. I know you are all too young for that reference. I lit it unconsciously. No memmory of flicking the bic.
