I had to use late-game clips from my original run becs I'm STILL enjoying my replay!! but as soon as I listened to this song I knew I had to make a Kaidan edit 💅 While the song itself is specifically about the oppression of women, I focused on Kaidan's position as an elf and as a mage as I felt the lyrics could be applied to many forms of oppression. Very happy to add origins clips as well teehee....

So um I started explaining my feelings in the tags and ran out of tags to finish explaining 😭😭 sowwy

#dragon age #agentofthedas #★ VESau #so I wanted to stay faithful to the motifs and references of the song #“this isn't rage / it's too specific” -> to start off I chose where a lot of Kaidan's aggression comes from — his issues with authority and #being controlled. it's appropriate since the circle is where his story starts! he plays into the unfair system in the circle only to realize #how futile and meaningless it was once he's conscripted into the grey wardens. but of course the wardens are a secretive military order...#they don't exactly allow a lot more freedom than the circle and they biological change you (literally change your blood)#“i love to hate symbolic limits” -> i loved the mesh between his conversation with solas where there is a physical gorge between their #platforms both physically and symbolically separating them as well as putting solas higher than kaidan — meshed with Kaiden's view of the #lyrium bowl of the Harrowing. the Harrowing represents the chain around his ankle to the Circle. he completed the quickest cleanest #Harrowing that the Circle had ever seen. he did it two years younger than most mages. it should feel like an accomplishment. but instead #it's like a formal stamp on his dehumanization. his phylactery (blood tracker) is sent to the capital with no hope of one day destroying it #like many things the phylactery is proof that he's under the circle's ownership. his own blood is literally owner by them. and that is what #the Harrowing represents as a symbolic limit of his independence his ownership of himself. in a similar vein solas's possession of him reps #the same thing.#“this is no statement / I'm complicit” -> this is essentially a line claiming some accountability for the position the singer is in #for kaidan it's two things: for starters when he was a member of the Circle he was extremely complicit in his own downfall. he was loyal to #the systems that oppressed him in the first place... if he compiled would he be able to make a good life for himself? in doing that he #betrays his best friend who attempted to escape the confines of the circle. he is literally complicit in his own oppression until he leaves #the circle. but secondly as pictured he sees his own form as a stone statue in the Prison of Regret. this implies that he regrets what he #has done to himself.#“this is a dream / god put me in it” -> very literal here. his god killed his mentor and he's thinking “this must be a dream/nightmare”#“the wind around the willow” -> this is an abstract line in the original meaning of the song. essentially it's speaking of a beautiful #moment that can't be replicated. i chose the time he earned Mythal's favor because this is pivotal to Solas's redemption. atp Kaidan was #becoming more sympathetic to solas and considering trying to redeem him — until the truth comes out about Varric. but for a brief moment...#the toll being Bellara's corruption and the tithe being his promise to Varric to take care of the team...#“the passage of time / the melting down a window” -> these lines combine in my edit for the melting down a window. This line is symbolic of #something melting – it's condition degrading over time. I really wanted to use the scenes with Ghilan'nain and Solas versus Solas and Kaidan #because I feel they mirror each other. Showing how not only the condition of the elves but the condition of Solas has degraded...
