The Shadowmaster's origins were revealed in the first issue of their limited series, with cover date of October, 1989. The issue introduced the Shadowmasters Shigeru Ezaki and James Richards, The Sunrise Society (Kantaro Umezu and Fujimura), Sojin Ezaki, Dewey, and Higashi created by Carl Potts and Dan Lawlis.
