The Skip
I found this poem today and it made me really think about what we throw away and how it represents who we are.

Wonderful insight into "The Skip" from the dude from Echo Nest, recently set loose on the full big-data set at Spotify. Take a read. Really interesting to see how active people are when using Spotify. They're skipping 1 in every 2 songs (n.b. "skipping" also includes starting a new song via search/browse/off-platform as well as simply hitting the skip button). I would have thought that most people would be sitting back and listening to full albums or playlists (like I do), but they're interacting with their stream loads.
I guess this is good for the ad supported part of Spotify's business, meaning advertisers' ads are more likely to be noticed.
This behaviour is also good for discovery and us lot trying to break new bands. Ultimately people are listening to more songs and voting with "the skip".
This also fits in with insight I saw recently that shows that something like only 2% of users listen to more than half an album - the album truly is dead in a streaming world. Long live the playlist.
This piece makes me realise what amazing insight into consumption behaviour we're about to start seeing from streaming. Bring it on.
