I think that without outside forces, Nightmare and Dream would be stuck in a never-ending loop. No matter how calm Nightmare gets or how mature Dream becomes they will be stuck doing the same thing over and over. Even with outside forces they're still at a grid-lock.
Both of them are aware of this but are at a lost to what to do. As concepts negativity and positivity always balance out in the end.
But as people? They're getting fed up.
I do like to separate Nightmare and Dream into those two categories! Because they are concepts! They are the embodiment of negativity and positivity.
They don't represent it! They are it.
But at the same time they're also people. They're the guardians made to watch over their mother. And I feel like both of them struggle with that. Nightmare purposely dehumanizes (demonsterizing??) himself to appear more threatening, more powerful! More in control than he really is! But also as an excuse. There's no reason to try and process what he went through in a healthy manner because he can't! (Which is a lie.)
Dream has other people dehumanize him, always asking for help, always expecting help and guidance. Never quite realizing that Dream is a person and not just this benevolent entity who's sole existence is to help.
It's taxing.
