So long about 12 years ago I had notions of doing the dreaded " lead singer solo album," with the intent to gather a bunch of local musician friends to back me up on a mess of covers and maybe an original or two...

Well, I only got around to roping in the excellent (now defunct) Brooklyn trash act, The Othermen, one Saturday afternoon to whip out a couple covers (via the Starvations and Scotty McKay); and I think a Thursday later stuffed myself and ol' Columbus cohort Karen Graves into a tiny BK practice space to do a Raveonettes song. That solo notion still floats around my noggin, so maybe I'll actually carry through with it sometime...

Gig #48 of 2015: Gabe Hart

This past Sunday, September 6th I managed to catch Gabe Hart of Jail Weddings do a brief acoustic performance at the Redwood Bar in downtown LA. I had never been there so early (it was 3pm) but spending that bit of daylight in the darkened room seemed to add to the ambience of the performance. Gabe’s performance had all the commanding strength of what he does when fronting Jail Weddings but with an added sense of vulnerability. I suppose I could sum up the set with one of the lines he sung that afternoon: “Well, excuse me if I break my own heart tonight...”
