Chapter 5
The blaring alarm at 4:25 did nothing to disturb the sleeping Kevin. Rolling over he slammed his hand on the cell phone and rolled right over, not even trying to check the time. He was having a particularly good dream of watching Brian beat the living hell out of Craig and in all honesty it was very entertaining. By the time Craig had fallen to the ground Kevin finally woke up, it was still dark outside
‘Ah that's grand, it must be around 4:00 now’ he thought, picking up his phone…………it read 5:40.
Kevin paused, blinked and promptly stood up and ran to his closet ‘Crap crap crap crap. Seán is gonna kill me, he said I had to be there by 5! Why didn't my alarm wake me up?’ he threw on some clothes and rushed to the bathroom. Sprucing himself up and rushing out the door. He ran all the way to the coffee shop. Throwing open the door he was greeted with Dan, who had just finished up cleaning the dining area.
“Ah now Kevin” he teased “it’s not good to be late on the first day,”
“I know I know, it wasn’t on purpose” Kevin sighed “where’s Seán?”
“He’s in the office, waiting for you” Dan turned and pointed behind the counter “it’s just through there, go past the kitchen and make a left” Kevin nodded and waved goodbye to Dan. As he made his way to the back he passed Brian and Daithi, both of who were arguing over whether Brian was fit enough to work with the espresso machine. Once Kevin got to the door he knocked softly and waited to hear any confirmation from Seán that he had heard him.
A moment later Kevin heard his friend call out to him and he pushed open the door. Inside was a small room lined with shelves, each shelf had a label and a manila folder in it for different expense reports and such. In the center of the room was a small wooden desk where Seán was sitting, filling out paperwork of some kind.
“Well if it isn't the man of the hour! Almost an hour late” Seán teased lightly. Shaking his head he swiveled around in his chair, it was one of those wheeled office chairs, and picked a plastic bag off the floor. “Here ya go!” He tossed the package to Kevin. Nearly dropping it, Kevin took a closer look at the package. It looked to be a brown piece of fabric with the logo on it.
“ Your new apron, now the rest of the uniform is fairly simple. Its a light green button up shirt and you can choose if you want the black or dark green tie. The pants will either be black or brown but that's up to you” Kevin nodded at Seán’s words
“Is it ok that I’m not wearing it today” he asked, opening the package and putting on the apron. Seán just smiled
“Yeah! Don't worry about it, it's really no big deal for now. Let's get you clocked in! I’ve set you up in the system so I’ll just show you how to do it” Seán opened one of the drawers in the desk and pulled out a keycard “This is your work I.D. it lets you clock in and keeps track of all your hours. All you gotta do is swipe the card in the machine at the front.” He handed Kevin the keycard and lead him over behind the counter to the computer “the login button is in the top right corner just click it and swipe the card, at the end of your shift it’ll log you out if you do the same thing.”
“Ah I see” Kevin responded, he clocked in pretty easily and turned once more to face Seán. Seán gave Kevin a nod and waved Dan over
“Dan will start training you now, he could use the help!” By this time Dan had reached both of them, and at Seán’s words he nodded
“We still have a lot to do Kevin, are you ready to get started?”
“Sure! I mean that's what I’m here for” He chuckled. With a smile Dan handed him 2 spray bottles and a rag
“Ok now, what you’re gonna want to do is take the yellow spray bottle and spray a little on the rag and wipe down the table. Then take the pink bottle and spray it on the surface of the table and wipe with the second rag” he pointed to each of the bottles “the yellow one is the non food safe general disinfectant. The pink one is the food safe sanitizer which is why it can be put on the table”
Kevin did as he was told and once he was finished he looked to Dan
“That’s fine Kevin, it’s relatively simple! Can you take the rest of this section and I’ll finish the others? I already did the rest of the morning work since you came late” he teased lightly.
“I turned off my alarm in my sleep, I was too busy dreaming”
“Ah good man Kevin we love to see it” Dan said with a laugh “what did you dream about”
“Ah now if I tell ya it won’t come true” Kevin said smirking “but it was a great dream”
Shaking his head Dan turned “alright I’ll take your word for it” he headed to his section to finish up as Kevin turned his attention back to the tables ahead of him. By the opening at 6:30 he had finished all he had to do. He slipped to the back to find Dan.
The Building wasn’t that big, with the back kitchen and office right across from each other, Kevin went about exploring a little. He passed the office and entered the kitchen. It was a standard working kitchen with two large ovens, a large stainless steel counter and a large fridge. It wasn’t in use right now as all the sandwiches were made to order and the pastries had been baked in the morning. Kevin noticed a list on the fridge, stating that pastries should be cooked in the afternoon too so they didn’t run out. The note was in Seán’s handwriting. Rounding the corner into the kitchen he found Dan, who was standing in front of a large machine. Dirty dishes from yesterday had been cleaned now and were sitting neatly next to the machine. “Hey Dan” Kevin called out. Dan turned around quickly
“Oh! Hey, I was just working with the dishwasher. It’s fairly easy. Wanna give it a go?”
“Sure! Just tell me how it works” Kevin walked closer so he could see the inside of the machine. Dan moved to the side and handed Kevin a sponge and ball of steel wool.
“So first you’re going to remove all the chunks of food that sometimes get in there, but I did that already, next you’re gonna go ahead and scrub any stuff that might get stuck on the wall bits. Then go ahead and drain it all out, scrub the nozzles and refill the dish soap dispenser! Simple!”
Kevin blinked “that-...that is a lot of steps.”
Dan shrugged “Yeah but once you get into the rhythm of it it works out.”
“Rhythm? What do you mean like dancing?” Kevin joked “Should I do a little shimmy while I clean?”
“Sure if you want to” Dan chuckled “I’ll let you get it done, should only take you like an hour. Oh! And the instructions are on the wall of you forget” as he said this he walked away, heading to the dining area. Since no one was cleaning on the tables in the dining room it was Dan’s job to do so.
Kevin waved goodbye and got to work. Since it was his first time cleaning this thing there were a few mishaps, such as spilling the dish soap all on the floor, and slipping in an attempt to clean it up. After 2 hours he did manage to finish it. He followed the instructions on the wall and once he closed up the dish washer he went out to meet Dan.
The dining room was a little chaotic as it was now around 9 am and most people had left for work or were at work already and the bus crowd was coming in for morning coffee and such. Dan was rushing around gathering messy plates and the like, as he passed Kevin he called out
“Grab a bin and get to work please!”
And Kevin did just that. As the hours passed it slowed down, he got to chatting with Brian who said the bandages were gonna come off soon. Kevin moved on quickly as the lunch rush picked up at 12:00. He also discovered that Seán was the one that made the sandwiches in the back! He also ran the dishwasher with Dan’s help. Since Brian and Daithi were the one taking orders and Dan was super busy cleaning and checking up on customers, Kevin saw how much they really needed his help. So he buckled down and got to work, for the rest of the day he pushed forward and ended the day off pretty well. As he left for the night at around 7 he passed a dark figure. Not moving, just standing and staring, the mans eyes unnerved him. Kevin did know what emotion was in them but he knew it was dangerous. He moved past the man who mumbled something Kevin did not understand. Pulling out his phone he texted the groupchat to let them know about the man, warning them to be carful.
He didn't sleep well the night
*Unknown POV*
“You should be worried” said the voice
The owner of which stared after Kevin, unblinking, unmoving. They pulled their hood down over their head just a bit more. Turned and looked to the coffee shop. The fluorescent lights both inside and on the sign had been turned off, the occupants of the building no longer in sight. The voice echoed again
