i just found my 'funny videos' download folder where I listed The Thing adaption by an animator with Pingu characters as 'Pingu's The Thingu' and I just want you all to know that I'm extremely fucking hilarious.

I was watching John Carpenter's The Thing earlier and I was really amazed at how well the movie holds up. It doesn't have obsolete technology (except that shot of the computer chess game at the start which used those green monitor graphics), and it kind of remains timeless in a sense. The stuff they used like the radios and vehicles are still stuff we use in a modern setting. Which I realize makes the 2011 prequel segment in pretty well at the same time. I actually watched that movie a long time ago without realizing it was a prequel, thinking it was a standalone (not knowing the 1982 movie exists). It hit me that the movie also is the same, they don't use obsolete technology and because they're in the Antarctic you don't question why they didn't just use a cellphone when shit hit the fan. The start even had the lovely Mary Elizabeth Winstead performing an autopsy on a dead animal while listening to a Walkman, another thing I didn't pick up on that this was supposed to be set in the 80s. And then finally the monster sequences from the 1982 film was very modest on practical effects, not going too far fetched. It didn't bother me a bit that the monster effects look nothing like the CGI magic pulled off in the 2011 movie. Oh yes and the ending of the 2011 movie with the mid credits scene was just the perfect setup for the 1982 film, I love when everything falls into place nicely! p.s i decided to watch the movie because of Lee Hardcastle's the thingu post circulating so kudos.
