The Triptych was painted between 1415 and 1436 with the earlier of the two dates the more probable given the affinity of this work with the style of the 'Stories of Santa Lucia' in the Pinacoteca at Fermo. If the appearance of the lateral saints - St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist - is still somewhat forbidding, and if they seem still to be firmly part of the world of the 1300s, the centre is occupied by the Virgin presented as an extremely elegant, divine idol, surrounded by crowds of devotees, the costume and physical attitude of each of which is rendered through an extremely subtle use of light and colour.

OTD in Music History: Giacomo Puccini's (1858 - 1924) last completed opera, "Il trittico" ("The Triptych") -- which is actually a suite of three separate but thematically interrelated one-act operas all dealing with the concealment of death -- receives its world premiere at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York City in 1918. (Puccini himself is not present.) The three one-act operas that make up "Il trittico" are "Il tabarro" ("The Cloak"), "Suor Angelica" ("Sister Angelica"), and "Gianni Schicchi." The first is a dark and brooding tragedy that features the gritty violence commonly associated with the "verismo" opera movement with which Puccini was closely identified early in his career. The second is an uplifting and melodramatically sentimental tale of religious redemption. The third is a broad farce dealing with themes of greed and deception. The critical reviews for "Il trittico" at its premiere were mixed; most critics agreed that "Gianni Schicchi" was the best of the three, and today it is by far the most frequently performed of the bunch. (Despite Puccini's clear intention that the trio should always be performed as a set, over the years it has also become quite common to break them up -- indeed, sometimes one of them will even be paired up with another one-act opera written by an entirely different composer.) PICTURED: An autograph letter that Puccini sent to his editor at the famous Ricordi music publishing house in 1919, heatedly passing along some corrections to errors that he had apparently found in the proof version of the first edition printed score of "Il trittico."
