"Dad, is my fit fresh?"
"Not now Sweaty, I'm pondering THE URN."
The symbol of an urn decorates this gravestone from 1803. When the 18th century ended, soul effigies began to disappear, replaced by symbols such as this one.

What if it’s Gritty in the urn
“In memory of Mrs Mary Pitkin, wife of Mr David Pitkin who departed this Life Sept 6th,1805 in the 39th Year of her Age.” When the 18th century turned into the 19th, symbols like the soul effigy disappeared, replaced by symbols such as the ones on Mary’s grave: Willows, symbolizing extreme grief and sadness and Urns which stood for the soul. Pinwheels show us that the entrance to eternity is close at hand.

This 19th century slate gravestone for Mrs Susan is decorated with the classic symbols of an Urn (the soul) and a willow tree (extreme sadness). It also has pinwheels on each side, indicating that the entrance to eternity is close at hand.

THE URN
The Urn
inconspicuously
resting atop the shelf
talisman
fortune-teller;
rough hewn wood
filled with flowers
simple centerpiece
a kitchen table
worn wood floors
oriental rugs
books, magazines
stacked high along the walls
click-click-clacking
talking and laughing
walls have ears
morning tea
evening wine
lovely evenings
spent in good company;
delightful drunken daze
exonerated of fears
awaiting its time
to be unearthed
grasps at life
amid unwavering faith
infrangible life
almost tangible
among the remnants
