Plastic Hearts by Miley Cyrus

If there is one thing 2020 has taught us it is expect the unexpected, and that is very much the case with this new Miley Cyrus record. The few teasers leading into the record suggested the former Hannah Montana star had ditched her bubblegum pop past in favour of a new retro 80s pop rock sound. Combine this with her sporting a new mullet hairdo and releasing covers of Blondie, The Cranberries, as well as collaborating with Stevie Nicks on an excellent mash-up of Edge of Seventeen and her own single Midnight Sky, it was clear the direction she was heading. The big question is does she pull it off? Mostly, yes.

On Plastic Hearts, Cyrus sounds liberated, clearly having a lot of fun making this record. Revelling in the big basslines, soaring guitar solos, and shimmering pop synths, her fierce, growling vocal tones perfectly complimenting the punky, glam rock vibes. Although there are a few moments here that don’t quite take off, the ones that do are some of the best pop tracks released this year – a year already stacked with truly excellent pop music. 

From superb collaborations with superstars the likes of Dua Lipa, Billy Idol and Joan Jett, to hands-in-the-air soft rock anthems such as Angels Like You and High, this is Miley’s most accomplished album by some distance and, for the most part, it’s an absolute blast.

CYR by Smashing Pumpkins

Ironically in the same week that Miley was seen to be dipping her toe in the rock world with Plastic Hearts, legendary rockers Smashing Pumpkins returned with their eleventh studio album Cyr, which coincidentally is their most pop record to date. Immersing the listener in glistening electro-pop instrumentation, Billy Corgan & Co. show that although their sound might have changed, they haven’t lost their ability to craft atmospheric music that both haunts and enlightens.

However sadly at 20 tracks long, Cyr is ultimately a bit of a mixed bag, with a noticeable drop off in quality once you hit the halfway point. Up until then though, there are plenty of moments to enjoy, with the pulsating hum of Anno Satana, the infectious, synth-drench melody of Ramona and the tribal calling of Birch Grove standing out as the record’s highlights.

We Built This City – The Xcerts

When I saw Scottish rockers The Xcerts had covered Starship’s iconic glam rock anthem We Built This City, I already had in my head exactly how that would sound. However, The Xcerts managed to deliver the complete opposite of what I was expecting, turning the track into a gorgeous, restrained acoustic number. This is exactly how cover songs should be done, taking the original and crafting something else entirely unique – stunning.

Black Lungs – Architects

After unleashing Animals last month, the first taste of their forthcoming album For Those That Wish To Exist, Architects’ second teaser Black Lungs is equally as heavy and impactful. Ambitious and backed by some tasteful orchestration, the early signs from Architects are positive, potentially signalling that their next record might just be their best.

Caterwaul – Dave Jakes

The former Lonely The Brave singer set the bar incredibly high with his first solo single Been In My Dream, however Dave Jakes’ second release is possibly even better than the first. Picking up exactly where he left off with Lonely The Brave, Caterwaul is propelled by a soaring, anthemic chorus, beautiful harmonies and Jake’s inimitable, gut-wrenchingly stunning vocal tones. Bring on the album!

Faith – The Weeknd

This week’s biggest talking point, the Grammys showed just how out-of-touch, irrelevant and uncredible they are in 2020 by inexplicably failing to nominate The Weeknd for a single award, despite his hallmark, record-breaking year with Blinding Lights and After Hours. 

Not to be deterred and lift the spirits of his fans like myself who couldn’t fathom the injustice of the snub, Abel rocked up for three artistic live performances to show the Grammys exactly what they had missed. The best of these was Faith, which for me is still one of the best songs of the year. With this hypnotic performance which you can see above, Abel solidifies just how special of an artist he is and shows how, at this moment in time, there are few artists out there who are operating at his level. Spectacular!
