Haha! Not short at all. The question needs to be asked again though, or their ages need to be reiterated. I don't like the back and forth thing on this. Agreed though, doesn't really matter. Ha! Unless you're writing fanfic or something...I dunno.

To be honest, I don't think the writers care that much--they've had plenty of opportunities to make some explicit reference to their ages and I've seen in many other shows or films where the characters' ages are stated or implied in someway (references to little brother/big brother, etc.), the fact that the writers aren't really going out of their way to state kinda tells me it's not important to them that much?

I think what only bothers me about this is just fandom having this insistence that Seth is older when it's not that clear-cut? I guess it's the English major in me, but extraneous details are nice, but what's typically analyzed is the text itself, the same with film. It doesn't matter to me that much, but as a fic writer, Richie being older is important to me because that's how I write him and that's how I view the text in order to come up with headcanons and the like, and I do believe he is being written as older in mind because Richie was the protector when they were children. But honestly, their age gap is less than a year, I don't think they would exist in a hard and fast big brother/little brother dynamic. By making them have such a small age gap, it allows for an equalizing effect and that's honestly the structuring of their dynamic--they're partners, even if during the timeline of the show that's been set off-kilter.

(I think the fact that much of Richie's characterization is filtered through his mental violation confuses people because what we're shown in the show isn't their typical dynamic? But that's a conversation for another day, I just have a lot of thoughts and feelings about it.)

If you watch one of the episode commentaries Rodriguez, AFTER Freddie says that Richie is older, says that he made an adjustment- like anon said- and that Richie is the younger of the two. That's what I've been basing their ages on.

I have watched all the commentaries and I believe in the pilot commentaries he told the same story he tells in the panel, the one about looking for a Richie who was around DJ’s age, but Zane was perfect so it didn’t matter. I need to re-watch to confirm, but I’m not going to do that right now.

But my issue with this to begin with, this is all extraneous information to the actual text–the show itself says he’s older, which is what I will always go with because that’s the text I am drawing my facts from. Most viewers aren’t even going to watch the commentaries or watch the panel interview where Rodriguez says these things, so are we saying those parts of the audience are wrong because they did not seek out that info?

Also Rodriguez isn’t a writer of the show, he’s a producer and sometimes director, which is also why I don’t think he has the authority to make these decisions? Like, he didn’t even write the original movie, Quentin Tarantino did.

(Sorry if I come off a little short in this response, I actually don’t like this debate because I think it’s kind of ridiculous and I don’t know why people find it so offensive that Richie might be older or that people could choose to think he is.)
