Stephanie groans. Her head hurt. She’d always thought the “seeing stars” thing was just cartoons being stupid—like the coyote hitting a wall the road runner sped right through—except she’s definitely seeing stars right now. The problem with pain was that it was all encompassing after a while. She couldn’t pinpoint what would have the little brat so insistent.
Pain shoots up her fingers as she claws herself up into a sitting position. Where had her gloves gone? Correction, glove. She still had one. Her fake nails were missing on three of her fingers, leaving her nail beds exposed.
Dimly, she’s aware there’s still a fight happening. Dick is thrown across her line of sight, the cape making the image funnier than it should be. He lands on his feet, but there’s a hard line in his jaw. She knows that look. Dick was pushing past pain.
“M’not dying,” she manages to cough out. More pain engulfs her chest. It’s only then when she looks down.
Oh.
Rebar is sticking out of her side. How it had missed anything vital was anyone’s guess. Or maybe it hadn’t and the kid had every reason to be afraid.
