re: your interesting avatar scenario, I obviously can’t say how it started but I’ve experienced similar scenarios where a group of kids pick a relatively quiet kid to do something like that to. It’s never anything harmful of course but it does confuse the kids a lot. The most memorable was when they got the entire grade to treat this girl like she was a movie star — people were asking her for autographs and everything. One kid even brought his ukulele to school and ad-libbed a song about her

Yeah, I always figured it was something like this, especially since they so staunchly refused to explain the joke or whatever. It could have been a worse thing they picked or they could have been mean about the joke, so it’s more an amusing and honestly kind of fond high school memory more than anything. Even 15 yr old me was honestly impressed by how long they all stuck to their guns over such a bizarrely specific scenario.
