another bind done! this was a really fun project for @szfiction of her dr. stone ryukasa fic people like you (always want what they can't have). its a faux 3-piece bradel with cutouts well worth the time, made as thanks for zed's endless patience while ive been in accident recovery.

i had such a clear vision for the typeset of this fic as i was reading it, and i really wanted to pull it all the way through the bind. every chapter header (and title and half-title pages) features fragmented portions of winslow homer paintings (one of my faves, most famous for his gorgeous lake/seascapes). the bulk of the fic is from tsukasas POV, but the case and typset are modeled after ryuusui--i really wanted to carry the story's main "theme" of ryuusui gradually engulfing tsukasa's life with, like, comfort so it felt fitting design-wise. the only chapter from ryuusui's pov is one of homer's few "landscape" paintings of mountains to emphasize the contrast :3

and of course if i was going to style a bind after the king of desire himself it had to have a million moving parts and a bunch of decadence. the case itself is 11 pieces and features three different styles of papermaking for the front/back/endpapers alongside a silk moire spine.

i also added hand-sewn endbands (medieval style, with some tension issues but we stay silly), a 4mm silk bookmark, 10k gold clasp, and $100 bill charm--and speckled edges with three shades of hand-mixed paint. i experimented a bit with gold HTF but ultimately settled back on ol' faithful and the titling is all gold metallic HTV

overall, im really happy with this bind and i had a wonderful time making it for such a lovely friend. merry christmas, happy new year, and happy (almost) birthday!!

So I do 3D modeling and printing as a hobby, and a few weeks ago I designed wheel guards meant to prevent office chairs from running over cables and clothes... or your pet's tail.

I got the idea from cowcatchers old locomotives used to have.

Anyways, yesterday I uploaded the model to Thingiverse, and just hours after uploading it, the Community Relationship Manager of the whole website left a comment suggesting I enter the model into a competition that's currently being held on the site.

So I did... and now it's in third place not even a day later. First place is $500, but the competition still has a month to go.

Then the Community Manager contacted me again, telling me they want to feature my model in an upcoming design promotion.

Just, what is happening? I mostly made this thing for myself in, like, an hour, and now it's suddenly super popular? This is all a little bit overwhelming 😵‍💫

Other models I worked on for weeks didn't get nearly as popular. I swear, it's impossible to predict what people will like.

I work with kids and sometimes we have to do safety lessons with them about like, not telling strangers on the internet your home address or something. And sometimes the kids wont understand why, so you have to impart upon them that, well, some adults want to hurt children. And thats kind of difficult to do, because you have to beat around the bush, both because you dont want to scare them (while still making them understand how serious it is) and because you might lose your job if you explain it too straight forward.

Luckily, for some reason, the villain of one of the most popular franchises with children for the last 10 years happens to be a serial child murderer. So when a kid asks why they shouldnt trust strangers, instead of hand wringing and humhawing my answer out, I can just say "we dont always know when a strange adult has good intentions with children, or when they are William Afton."

I’m so proud of senshi for making it so far in the tumblr sexyman poll.
