Don't get too jazzed about the latest GOP frontrunner (Remember 2012?)

Republican primary season is upon us; let the surging begin.

First it was Scott Walker. “Walker Surges to Double-Digit Lead in Iowa” declared the Washington Times on Feb. 25. A few weeks later, it was “Ted Cruz Surging in Polls.” And now it’s Marco Rubio, surging to the “Front Of GOP Pack.” If you’re new to presidential politics — particularly Republican presidential politics — then all of this surging must seem pretty exciting. Walker says some words at Steve King’s Iowa Freedom Summit, and suddenly he’s attracting twice as much Hawkeye State support as any other candidate. Cruz asks some students at a right-wing evangelical university to imagine him as the second coming of Ronald Reagan, and suddenly he’s elbowing his way into the top tier. And Rubio returns to Miami to launch his own White House bid — and suddenly he’s neck-and-neck with that other Florida Republican (the one with the slightly more famous name). But do not be deceived. These surges are nothing new. Thanks to a perfect storm of volatility-inducing factors — a large, colorful cast of candidates; a front-runner that nobody really liked, and a media (and social-media) climate ready to amplify every little misstep into a full-blown campaign crisis — no fewer than nine candidates led the 2012 GOP primary contest in the nine months before Mitt Romney eventually clinched the nomination. Michele Bachmann won the Iowa Straw Poll in August 2011 — then finished sixth in the caucuses a few months later. 

This cycle is shaping up to be the same sort of roller-coaster ride. So before you get too jazzed about the latest leader of the GOP pack, check out the GIF above and remind yourself that he probably won’t be the last man standing when the party finally arrives in Cleveland for its convention next July.
