I was reading If Lost Return To Phil and it hit me that Dan playing Romeo and comparing himself to him. I was just curious, have you read 'The Picture Of Dorian Gray' ever?

(cont’d) Bc I’m really starting to get ready for an angsty end, and wanted to know if it was your inspiration to make Dan play Romeo (okay, situations are quite DIFFERENT,but endings could be similar and thinking it screws up my mind)sorry if I’m a bother btw

omg absolutely not a bother this is the BEST QUESTION EVER prepare for a way longer answer than you ever wanted.

I was supposed to read dorian gray my first semester of college - but it turned into that ‘fuck i dont have time to read this before i write an essay about it so sparknotes will do’ kind of thing. I did like what little I read, though. but that wasn’t my inspiration to make Dan play Romeo - that has a very different explanation. 

anyway, literary discussion and spoilers for up through ILRTP part 7 under the cut! (p sure i can answer this fully without spoiling the ending)

so in the first draft of ILRTP, Dan was a lawyer in 2021. and then i remembered that in no future would Dan ever go back to uni to do law, so that was out. I really liked the idea of him being an actor instead, so I went with that. it went very well with the whole self-discovery thing. and I wanted him to be a big deal in the acting world, so he had to be the star of whatever play i decided to integrate into the story (which, I discovered, was an excellent way to drive the story forward and enhance it). R&J was a no brainer for me, because it’s the play I’m most familiar with, but also because PARALLELS and character development which I will now explain, starting from the beginning:

so in part 3, when Dan realizes that he’s playing Romeo, he’s a bit critical of his character (in fact, he calls him a ‘dumbass’)

…it only took a few scenes for Romeo to completely forget about Rosaline, his supposed true love at the beginning of the play. Was Juliet really that great that Romeo just dropped everything to pursue her? […] Romeo had been entirely convinced that no one could hold his heart like Rosaline. And, just like that, was proven incredibly wrong. Somebody better came along; was it really Romeo’s fault that that happened?

news flash, he ain’t comparing himself to Romeo here. he’s comparing Romeo to someone who’s name starts with ‘P’ and ends with ‘recious angel Phil Lester’. at this point, Dan’s angry with Phil for moving on his absence. which, he realizes, is irrational, but hey, are emotions ever really rational? Dan’s upset that Phil’s unavailable now that he’s fully accepted that he wants to be with Phil. And, Phil told Dan in part 1, “I’d choose you every time.” (this paragraph now ends bc spoilers) 

however, as the story goes on, Dan finds himself relating more and more to Romeo. in part 5, he struggles with playing a romantic lead when his own love life is such a ‘pile of shit’, but admits that he’s a bit like Romeo at his core:

Romeo was a passionate, impulsive character; not unlike Dan in that aspect, really.

And later in part 6, Dan finds himself agreeing with Romeo’s analysis that love is kind of ridiculous and unfair, and he finds himself relating to Romeo’s anguish about his unrequited love for Rosaline (oho role reversal):

“It was. What sadness lengthens Romeo’s hours?” (Mark as Benvolio)

“Not having that which, having, makes them short.”

“In love?”

“Out.”

“Of love?”

“Out of her favor, where I am in love,” Dan replied, willing himself to really feel this scene instead of just doing it on auto-pilot. If there were anything he could relate to in this play, it was this.

But it’s not until part 7 that Dan makes the ultimate connection, and, ultimately, the reason I chose R&J: 

Dan always thought it was dumb that most people didn’t understand that when Juliet says ‘wherefore art thou Romeo? she’s not asking where he is, but why he is. […] he had to be a Montague, forbidden and untouchable. And it’s both Romeo’s and Juliet’s refusal to acknowledge that that leaves them dead. They thought they could circumvent their fate by lying to themselves and others, but the audience knows what will become of them.

And it was when Dan stepped onto the stage to perform the monologue that, for the first time, his heart truly ached for how doomed they were from the start.

[coughs loudly and points to bolded parts] see the connection? Dan may be thinking about it in terms of Juliet wanting Romeo, but you could easily reverse it and bam - forbidden love theme, anyone? 

I didn’t actually plan for Dan to like, become Romeo over the course of the story, but it wound up working out that way (and quite well, I think) as he grew and learned up to this point. 

so yeah, at the risk of falcon-punching you with any more parallels I shall end my explanation there. (did i just like meta my own fic? I need to be stopped.)
