Do you think Steve is good at chess?

And after the war, after Steve wakes up in this new world, he still plays. At first against himself, to try to keep some semblance of normalcy. But then he starts getting bored and homesick, so he looks for a partner.

Maybe he plays with the elderly in those chess benches at the park. And he likes that a lot because some of these people remember the war, some of them even served in it, and it helps him adjust to be able to talk to people with similar life experience, and he likes that the people at the park light up when they see him. That he has friends there who care about him.

Eventually Bruce finds him. Bruce because none of the others really strike me as the “walk in the park” kind of people. So maybe Bruce needs a minute away from Tony and the chaos of the avengers tower.

And he finds Steve, playing chess with one of the old men at the park, and he watches from the sidelines. And for a while he says nothing, before he starts teaming up against Steve with his chess partner. And the three of them have a great time.

This continues, right, and eventually Natasha and Clint (because in my brain they are two sides of the same coin, it’s rare to find one without the other) join in. Not at the park, maybe, but they show up and play Steve and Bruce with one of those magnetic airplane chess sets they found in a dollar store—or maybe Steve bought it, I don’t know. But they play in the tower or at Steve’s apartment and Clint and Natasha are a great team, but they’re no match for Steve and Bruce, a soldier and a scientist.

Tony finds out eventually. Instead of ridiculing it, he ropes Pepper into playing a game with them, and in teams they all play.

Steve shouldn’t even be surprised when an expensive-looking wood chess set shows up one day on his counter.

dean's always getting called in by the teachers because she keeps getting into fights, but time and time again she tells him "they were gonna hurt someone smaller than them!" and how could dean ever be mad at her for that? so he takes her out for pizza and ice cream.
