Receiving no response, Armand slowly raised his eyes from his paperback thriller, frowning at Daniel over the armrest of the massive chair he’d curled up in. Daniel was sitting on the floor in front of the large television set, completely absorbed in playing Adventure at the third level of difficulty.

“Daniel.”

This time there was a vague questioning sound. Armand rolled his eyes.

“I’m growing tired of London. I want to be back in the New World.” Still no reaction from his lover. 

“I want to move to New York. I think we should leave in a week at the latest. Are you listening to me?”

I miss them too.  However, you shouldn’t be too worried.  We’ll hang out again together soon.  We’re not broken up -- we’re just seeing other bros right now.  That’s all.

The world took on a whole different perspective when he could actually see it finally.  Once the initial intense, alarming induction into the Human Rebellion by a most unwelcoming unit had worn off, things had stabilized into a form of balance.  No one shouted at him anymore or waved guns in his face.  In fact, in the course of a few weeks, Miller had actually managed to stumble into a position of minor authority over his unit.

Granted, his unit consisted only of two people -- himself and York.  Yet the guy running things here had told him, in outright terms, that he was responsible for the leech.  Not only that but he was equally responsible for trying to unlock the mess that was in The Daniel’s mind.  Despite their open, hostile attitude towards the immortal among them, it was agreed upon that the vampire could be the very key to their success against the Empire.

Miller didn’t know how he would do it but he was determined to try.  Despite having frightened him half to death that first day they’d captured them, being here was a good arrangement for him.  He had a room with a decent bunk.  He wasn’t starving or forced to scavenge for food.  They had given him treatment that cured his cough.  They had given him glasses to see through.

People on this base treated him oddly.  He often heard them whispering his name whenever he came around.  Mayfair.  No one really sought to make him feel welcome.  That was likely due to the double agent status of his family.  A division of the bloodline; those loyal to the Empire and those who worked -- in secret -- to support the human rebels in their attempts to overthrow those in power.  It would take time before he could hope to win anyone’s trust.

Though, honestly, the only ones he cared to trust were the ones he kept his company with.  Not that he had heard much from Lasher lately.  He wondered if his close proximity to others made it more difficult for his spirit companion to approach him?  Or if it was the near constant presence of York?  Lacking the steady presence of that shadow at his back, Miller was having to move alone in his own skin for the first time since he had left home.

He prowled through the base until he located York.  A slight nudge sought to stir the immortal out of his thoughtful stillness.  Plus, that motionless thing was fucking creepy.  “Hey.  We got patrol duty.  You got your gear?”

He doesn’t really have an ideal date, though he’s all for going to theatres and symphony orchestras and the movies. Anything at all that stimulates his senses. It’s a good way to start and they can talk about it afterwards. Dinner in the park can also be very nice. If there are some proper mortals around, of course. And then clubbing!
