Why?

So there is this podcast that I listen religiously to called The Art of Charm and it recently featured an episode with Simon Sinek, author of Start With Why. 

Great! I love this podcast and I’m currently reading (putting off) this book. Well, mind blown that I went back and started rereading.

Simon made some great point but most important question for our careers, lives, relationships, etc….WHY?

A great point that I loved was that we don’t all have to love our jobs but we get to love our jobs. Loving what we do is not a privilege, it’s a right. Now a question we should ask ourselves is whether we demand this right? Do we choose to chase our dreams and passions over money?

Have you ever heard that “Europeans work to live but Americans live to work”?

Money is great. It’s an addiction, in it’s own form. But it is an addiction that allows us to put a roof over our heads (and our families), food, transportation, luxuries, etc. It’s a cycle. 

We often choose to make more money at the expense of what we love. Now, the irony is that often, doing what we love creates greater wealth. Call me crazy but I’ve opened up my eyes to this. When people love what they do and share that enthusiasm, others will buy into it.

A few months ago I took a job at a public relations firm because like any other adult, I need to pay the bills so why not use my degree. I’d recently moved back to Austin and had struggled to find a job with a restaurant as an events coordinator (which I’ve mentioned in previous post that it’s my passion).

Well not to sound like an ungrateful, selfish lady but after a few weeks I was dying. Oh I hated it so much! I would take breaks from my desk to go cry in the bathroom and I would cry on my way home and on my way to work. This job changed me. 

My coworkers from my retail part time had always described me as upbeat and positive and even they could see the changes this new job was creating in my life. It was turning me into a different person. 

And I know what everyone will say. It’s about your “perspective” and “attitude”. Well, it was a struggle because this job had me at my wits end. 

Well I loved how the guys mentioned this and that these changes can completely transform a person and their relationships. It’s our right to make changes in our careers to bring back stability in our lives.

Well I believe in this Mary Kay dream! I’ve always believed. And I believe that at this moment I am laying the foundation for my dreams to come to realize. Hey! I don’t like to be rejected and be told no to. It sucks! But I refuse to quit. I quit on quitting on this dream.

My WHY for my Mary Kay dream is because I have always loved the way it’s transformed the lives of the women that I’ve grown up with and the potential to offer that to other women in need of it. I would not be who I am today if it wasn’t because I grew up around strong and independent women…that happened to be Mary Kay.

I learned about dreams and goals, financial independence and endless possibilities and opportunities. I learned about valuing and loving yourself and respect and passing those values on to bring out more greatness into this world. 

This is WHY I want to be a Mary Kay director. I want to make a difference in this world and this is HOW I will bring it. By becoming a Mary Kay director and passing on to others.

And to finish for tonight, though it is still in the beginning phase for me and still have a long road ahead to become a director, these small steps have brought me so much joy during the time I was in public relations. These small joys are what brought a smile to my face and continue to give me a reason to be me.
