Man's Best Friend
A couple of months ago I was sitting around the house and I had an idea. It would be an idea that would significantly change our future. We had just purchased a new house (well renting it....), and had started to take on numerous other responsibilities for the first time as well. I hadn't started both of my jobs yet, and was anxious to put some extra time and effort into something other than cleaning the house.
An hour after I woke up, I was sitting on my Mac. I decided to venture over to craigslist and type in the word "dog" into the search bar. Before I knew it I was overtaken with this idea of acquiring a puppy (An idea that Ryan and I had been talking about since early this year). Anyways, I started doing my research; however, previously throughout numerous night time conversations, lying in bed, we had already hypothetically narrowed our choice down to two breeds. In turn, I furthered my search on the internet by looking for either Labrador puppies or Australian Shepherd puppies, both being way too adorable for my eyes. Then, I took the next step, I started calling different breeders and nothing seemed to be really getting into motion. You see, the reason that I wanted to get the dog that day was due to the fact that Ryan would be leaving for a conference and I wanted to surprise him (give him something to think about all week other than work when he returned!!!).
So....I called a couple of more breeders, left a few messages, and waited. Finally I received a call from a breeder just outside of Celebration, Florida, and she had just two or three black labrador puppies left from her litter. This sounded great, but there was one issue, I wouldn't be back in time for Ryan to see the pup (and I had to drive him to the airport!!!). Just as I pulled out of the driveway to go run an errand, I recieved another call from an Australian Shepherd breeder in New Smyrna Beach, FL. She told me that she had three aussie puppies left, two boys and a female. After a short conversation and some negotiation on price and other details, I decided to make my way over there.
Jack, and what a dog he would come to be. Well, first I had to choose him from what was left of the litter. So, I finally arrived at my destination about twenty-five minutes after the initial phone call ended. As I pulled into this great big plot of land that was filled with horses, cattle, and about eight sheep dogs, I began to really enjoy the presence of the location. I met with the woman breeder, and she took me to the puppies. We talked as we let two of the three puppies play by a picnic table that lie in her yard. The first, a girl and she was beautiful, but she was on hold (someone was coming to get her later that day.) The second, a fuzzy little furrball of a male, his energy was uncomparable to anything I had ever seen. Finally, after watching these two play for about five minutes, I inquired about the third puppy available. We walked back into the barn where the puppies had been residing, and down below in the smallest of the crates lie Jack. He was smaller than the rest, but his demeanor much better. I asked if I could take him out to play. At that moment he ran out the crate for just a second, stopped, sat down, and then looked up at me. I decided to pick him up, more of an instinctual action, and when I did he did not make a fuss. Jack, looked at me and just fell into my arms. I knew right then that this would be our dog.
Paperwork came next along with a currency exchange for our new puppy. My next step would be to get him home. I got the little guy into the car, strapped on my seatbelt, and put him on my lap (he was wrapped up in a little towel, probably one of the cutest and most memorable moments of the year anyways.) The ride home seemed to take forever, I just wanted to get home and show Ry the new edition to our family. After the long journey of the day I finally got to the house. Our new puppy in one hand and a struggle for the keys in the other.
The door opened, and I let Jack down and his little paws touched the floor of our home for the first time. Ryan was in our room off to the left as I remember it, and Jack slowly made his way over to him as both of them submerged into the center of our living room. I remember saying "Go say hi to daddy," and the face that Ryan projected in response to our new puppy just lit up my world.
I thought it would be fun to tell the story of our first dog, and this is just the beginning. Everyday is a new adventure, each morning a new stepping stone in the process of loving another animal with as much love as it can possibly receive. I will say this, it is a challenge, but in the end Jack has shown us so many things that we wouldn't have realized without his help. Ryan and I can't get enough of the little fellow, and one day He will be the best companion not only for us, but for our children as well.
