Since you asked, here's a question for you... Please explain why you thought Life of Pi deserved to win Best Picture? I do not agree with the stance so I am curious to hear what merits you saw in it to win the whole thing.
I didn't necessarily want it to win, perse, because I've only seen a few other of the films that were nominated (I didn't see Argo, so I have no interest in taking away that honor from it, it sounds like the movie deserved it). But of the films that I did see, Life of Pi was miles above the others. It was a well thought out, wonderfully directed movie about, and here's the most important part, a book that for all intensive purposes had no right to be made into a movie. 3/4ths of the book is spent with a teenage boy on a raft with a tiger - how do you make a movie out of that? And yet, they did it. They managed to capture the religion aspects of the book that are so important to the symbolism (can you tell that I really love Yaan Martel's book) and kept that vein going throughout the movie. The cinematography was OUT OF THIS WORLD GORGEOUS and managed to be beautiful, without sacrificing the story. It felt like an authentic portrayal of a wonderful book, that was not at all pandering to the Indian culture or the religions that were discussed.
And CAN WE TALK ABOUT SURAJ SHARMA???? He was fucking amazing. He spent the entire movie talking to air, not able to swim, and entirely new to acting, and he was WONDERFUL. The fact that he wasn't at least nominated for best actor is a goddamn CRIME. He completely made that movie for me and, I think, added a lot of the sincerity that you can find in the film.
