Private cast screening of The Bitter Tears of Petra Von Kant before it opens tomorrow night. A perfect wrap up of my three years living on the gorgeous island of O’ahu. Directing this show has long been a goal of mine and we have a spectacularly beautiful production to share with you all. Getting to be in the room and practice our chosen art form together, especially these days, has been such an honor and a true pleasure (Even if I haven’t slept properly in days). Directing (and sound designing) was a life saver for me. BOTD: Rainer Werner Fassbinder - his career lasted less than two decades and his immeasurable influence can still be felt to this day. Gone far too soon at only 37 (from a cocaine and barbiturate overdose) he left this world with 40 feature films, two television series, three short films, four video productions, and 24 plays. FROM A MOVIE: “The bitter tears of Petra von Kant” by Rainer Werner Fassbinder, 1972 — Saint Laurent by Tom Ford, Fall 2003 and Prada, Fall 2014 Swipe to see an editorial from Interview mag that’s really in that movie mood! This film has an all-female cast and is set in the home of the protagonist, Petra von Kant. It follows the changing dynamics in her relationships with the other women. Petra von Kant is a successful fashion designer arrogant, caustic, and self-satisfied. She mistreats Marlene (her secretary, maid, and co-designer). Enter Karin, a 23-year-old beauty who wants to be a model. Petra falls in love with Karin and invites her to move in. The rest of the film deals with the emotions of this affair and its aftermath. Fassbinder tells his story in a series of 5 or 6 long scenes with extended uses of a single camera shot and deep focus.
