Time for another classic. The Body Snatcher 1945 Loosely based on Robert Louis Stevenson's short story (itself an extrapolation of the heinous deeds of "resurrection men" Burke and Hare) Stars Boris Karloff, Henry Daniell, Russell Wade and Bela Lugosi. In order to continue their medical experiment, a local doctor portrayed by (Henry Daniell) and his student lab assistant ( Russell Wade) must arrange for cadavers from a grave robber, who brings them corpses from various places. In my opinion aside from Frankenstein this is indeed Karloffs finest role, playing a deranged cabman named Gray who by his nights searches for fresh cadavers where ever he may find them. Karloff steals the light in every scene he's in, creating a uneasy and inescapable presence in the room. As a brief aside, The Body Snatcher is the last film that Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi acted in together. Lugosi's role as one of the doctors servants is small and pitifully acted. He's dominated by Karloff in both of their scenes together. It's a sad end to a classic marquee pairing, and it mainly serves to emphasize the malevolent brilliance of Karloff's acting. Overall Chilling, complex, and artfully told, The Body Snatcher feels like a cautionary tale relayed in front of fireplaces on cold stormy nights. The kind of Horror that stays with you, and lingers at the back of your brain. The Body Snatcher is a true classic horror story and highly recommended 8.5/10 "You'll never be rid of me, Toddy...
