This is one of the most impressive books in the world, in my opinion. It's written from the perspective of Death. His words at the beginning of each chapter are poetic and chilling. It sets an eerie but somehow humble tone to Liesel's story. Set in Germany during Hitler's reign, Liesel Meminger's brother dies and her mother sends her off to live with another family. She takes a book that was left to her brother. This is her first book. Yet she cannot read. With her new family in a new place, she's teased at school for not being able to read. When her new father, Hans, hears about this he begins teaching her to read. Her lessons begin every night when she wakes up from her nightmares. The depth and truth captured in this novel rock me to the core. I'm always impressed with stories within stories. I cry when Max writes a book for Liesel.
