The Bougies
What do Oahu-based indie band The Bougies have in common with Pop Rocks, one of your favorite childhood candies? They are “sweet delights with a bite!” Formerly a brother-sister duo, The Bougies have since expanded into a four-piece band made up of brother and sister Jordan and Kelly Bongolan, Julian Zhou, and Joy Furushima. “We came up with the name by choosing a word we frequently called each other whenever one of us did something we thought was snooty, which wasn’t really snooty at all, but we just like to give each other a hard time. It’s a brother-sister love/hate relationship,” Kelly Bongolan jokingly admits.
The sibling’s and bandmates’ amazing chemistry is obvious in both their cooperative songwriting process and their performances. Each band member lends a hand to the creative process: Kelly pens most of the lyrics, Jordan crafts the melody, Julian refines it with his “flair and jangle”, and finally, Joy adds her bass riffs to Kelly’s driving drum beats. “The circle of (song) life!”
One of the band’s trademarks are their emotional live performances. Their favorite song to perform is also one of their newest, “Shallow Fool,” written secretly by Jordan when his sister’s girlfriend broke up with her. Kelly proudly says, “Each band member plays their part with so much feeling that when it’s all tied together, the outcome is intense and full of emotion. After we’re done playing it we just look at each other wide-eyed, like wow, that was fun…let’s do it again!”
The Bougies are so stoked to “rock their mop tops” and showcase their heavier songs from their new EP at their second Art & Flea appearance on March 28. Sweet!
