She had done a lot of thinking about life. About all the beautiful intersections of time and space— the collisions of hearts and footsteps. She had thought a lot about what she needs and what she wants— what she craves and yes, even what she doesn’t know she needs. Yet. And the product of all that thinking— of all that assessment— is something that is pretty darn ambiguous. She’d like to say she knows the answers to her questions and has it all planned out. She’d like to tell you she knows the yin to her every yang— the route to every destination— the cure to every hurt in her life. But she doesn’t. She’s no more qualified to make decisions for her future than you are. And she knows it. But there’s a simple reason for that, and it’s quite simply that she can’t tell you what’s going to happen down the road. She can’t tell you how what she needs now is going to transform into what she needs tomorrow. Or next week. Or three years from now. She can’t tell you what her heart will crave— what her footsteps will chase. The safe boundaries and unknown frontiers of her life won’t always stay the same, because this girl— she is always changing. But she does know what her heart wants now. Right now, she loves the places she can feel the pull of the future and the lessons of the past. She loves standing against a big sky or a crashing ocean, and feeling small. She loves the wind in her face, the warmth of the sun, the sound of summer nights. She longs for the moments she connects with this world— with another soul— on a level and in a way that words cannot explain. Like magic. And she loves turning her back on the chaos and the spin and sinking her bare toes into the sand. Or the cut grass. She loves laying back on a bed of earth, soaking in the smell of something real— and gazing up. Up, at a dark sky and an incredible canopy of stars. That— that is where she feels most alive.
