The pen in Dru’s hand wavered just a little, barely a half a squiggle on the page, before they were able to refocus. Usually, they were so steady-handed--they had to be, holding a tattoo gun--but the comment threw them. Rory threw them. He was so precious, like one of the orchids he had in his shop. Dru imagined that he required special care. Not babying or over-coddling. Just a special kind of care, and then he’d thrive anywhere, in any climate. Or maybe Dru was overthinking all of this--they loved a good romance.

They got back to drawing, swallowing down the fluttering feeling and trying to drop their voice down, to make it low and husky and manly. They always felt like they had to offset these soft feelings with hardness somehow, to stay in the middle. They always felt most comfortable in the middle. It took them a second to compose themself, but it was a quick second. “If only you were doing the interview,” they answered, tracing over the lines in pen that they had drawn in pencil before. They’d never been much good with paper, no matter what they were drawing with, but they had never drawn a zinnia before and they needed to practice. “You don’t make me nervous like this does.”

Rory switched from working on one flower pot to the next, and Dru stopped drawing to watch him. He was handsome. They told him so all the time, not that he had ever onced accepted the compliment. Maybe they weren’t saying it right, though they were always as sincere as they were able to sound when they said it. “I try not to make you nervous at all,” he said, looking away from them so they couldn’t see what his face looked like when he said it, not that Dru would have been able to face him in return.

As a matter of fact, Rory did not make them nervous, exactly. Rory made them lots of other things--curious, excited, shy, awkward, self-conscious, happy--but nervous never really came up. “You don’t,” they answered, pink pen creating the hundredth petal on the flower they were still trying to draw. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t complain. It’s a big chance, this interview. Do you want me to mention you?” They paused, thinking about how the words sounded. How they could be interpreted, or misinterpreted. “I mean, the store. The flowers--they’re kinda your work too.”

❝ i, uh… i’d like to go out with you. ❞ (dru/rory)

“You would?” they asked, unable to hide their utter shock. “Well, that certainly wasn’t what Dru had expected to hear. When people came up to them and opened with, ‘Hey, uh, can I ask you something?’ it was usually either tattoo business, or awkward questions about their gender or dead name or whatever. It was rarely--no, it was never the cute florist asking them for a date. That had never happened before. Nothing like that had ever happened before. It was just almost unimaginable, except for the fact that it was happening right before their eyes.

“You would?” they asked, unable to hide their utter shock. Seeing Rory’s face fall, though, they had to correct it, a little. “Sorry. It’s just. Like, you want to go out with me? Or you’re pre-emptively rejecting me, like ‘I’d like to go out with you, but you’re not my type’. Or...something else?”

“I’d like to go out with you,” he repeated, as if that cleared things up at all. It did not. It cleared nothing up.

“Cool. Yeah. Cool. That’s cool.” They gripped the edge of the counter to stop themself from saying something stupid or letting on that they had no idea what was happening. “So. Yeah.”

“Yeah?” Rory asked.

Uh-oh. Only one way to go from here. “Yeah, obviously.”

“Obviously?” Rory repeated, that precious goddamn smile that made Dru want to scream lighting up his adorable face. Damn. Why did it have to be a cute florist? Wasn’t working next to a florist hard enough? “Okay, cool.”

“Cool.”

He turned and walked out. The minute the doorbell chimed behind him, indicating that it was close, Sade spoke up. “So, is that a date or no? I can’t tell.”

“Me neither...” Dru replied honestly, shaking their head. This was not going to go well.

Maia never liked parents, so maybe she wasn’t the person to ask. She’d told Juniper, laughing to show him that her words were part joke, that it was because she barely knew her own, and her foster parents had always been more like underpaid chaperones who wanted nothing to do with her. Parents were not her area of expertise. But meeting his parents had her doubting her own words. They were dicks, both of them, and not in a good way. In the worst way. The worst dicks.

Maia also didn’t particularly care for Juniper, in all truthfulness. He was starting to grow on her, yeah, but she wasn’t stupid enough to think that he’d be spending time with her if he weren’t trying to throw off his (worst-dick) mother, or that she’d spend time with him if it weren’t the best source of food and beds she’d had in a long time. And he was selfish, and out of touch, and cocky. But there was a difference. Like, he wasn’t a dick. His parents were dicks.

So when he said he was like his father, her response was immediate and sincere for once. “You’re fucking kidding, right?” she answered leveling him with her most no-nonsense stare. The kind people used to give her when she did literally anything. “You’re not like him. Not in the ways that matter.”

“You don’t know that,” Juniper replied. And, yeah, she didn’t know it. But she felt it in her gut, and she believed it, and that was what counted.

“You’re not,” she repeated. “Look. Your father, he’s...a dick. The worst kind of dick.” She sighed, sitting on the corner of the bed nearest to him. Not, like, close to him. They weren’t close like that. But near-ish. “I know it’s mostly for show and stuff but you’ve actually been pretty good to me.” Better than any guy she’d been with in a damn long time, not that she’d admit to it. The fact that her best relationship in years was fake was a level of pathetic she’d need to address later. “He wouldn’t be. You know he wouldn’t be. That’s why you got me this ridiculous dress. So you’re not like him, okay?” She sighed again and stood up, stepping away from him and from the weirdness of having a pleasant conversation .”Now, help me remember where the damn zipper was so I could get out of this thing,” she demanded, twisting herself about trying to find the exit for this outfit.

Maia washes dishes by hand because she says she’s faster than the dishwasher. June doesn’t touch dirty dishes with his hands at all because ew

Hmmm...June definitely cuts by hand (he probably doesn’t know kitchen gadgets exist). Maia will try any gadget once but if she doesn’t like it, she’ll never mention it again

Who pours the cereal into the bowl first and who pours milk before the cereal?

Um they both pour cereal in first they’re not heathens

Who buys/drinks bottle water and who uses/drinks from the tap?

June drinks bottled water. Maia will drink anything that doesn’t LOOK dirty

Maia hoards. June throws away

Who buys milk in a paper carton and who buys it in a plastic jug?

June will buy whichever he sees first. Maia always buys a paper carton

Who picks paper bags and who picks plastic bags after grocery shopping?

Maia picks paper and June just grunts and lets the cashier choose. He doesn’t know the difference

Who HOARDS the plastic bags and who recycles them?

They both recycle them. June because he doesn’t like to hoard things and Maia to spite her foster parents (who were bag hoarders)

Who hoards salt/pepper packs, togo silverware and other togo condiments?

Maia hoards anything that’s free that she thinks she’ll use

Who lets the garbage can overflow before throwing it out?

Neither. June would be horrified (though he’d just complain until someone took it out or wait for a maid) and Maia knows better

Who gets annoyed when someone doesn’t use the clips for the potato chips?

Neither. Maia will eat stale chips and June would just idk buy new ones or something

Neither again

June (though Maia knows she’s supposed to)

Maia and secretly June when he thinks no one is looking

Maia loses everything and June has never lost a single object in his little life

Neither. Maia picks it up and rinses it off to put in her drink and June just leaves it where it is to make a little wet spot

June probably? He doesn’t know how to do things

June organizes the spice rack but only on reeeeeeeally bad days. Maia uses the microwave more 

Who stops the microwave one second before time's up?

Neither. Maia will let it beep until she’s damn ready and June doesn’t even use it
