Hey I was wondering if you could help, I've always wanted to be a professional ballerina but I have no idea how to start from where I am now. I've done ballet for a solid 12 years now at my local dance school and I'd really like to start the path to becoming a professional. Additional stuff: I'm an ISTD Grade 5 ballet dancer and there are only lessons at my dance school once a week but I constantly practice. If you could help I would be so grateful as right now I'm a bit lost and stuff. Thanks!
ok well it sounds like you have a good base! now, what you’ll need to do is find a serious training program. this may or may not require you to live away from home, and is usually a bit pricey so now’s the time to start planning financially for the years ahead of you.
the first thing to do when you are looking for a professional training program for ballet is to single out the style you prefer and want to pursue. to be honest, you may not even know which style you like yourself, so it’s good to attend summer programs and workshops to see if the technique fits and you like the teachers, atmosphere, and facilities. i’d also advise looking around online for reviews and videos about places you are considering, and asking yourself questions like:
how many dancers have graduated from this program and gone on to a successful career?
is there a history of students leaving, being unsatisfied, or being injured?
how many graduates of this program are dancing in a company you like/can see yourself dancing with in the future?
does this program offer pas de deux classes? (this is actually very important)
is this program more focused on preparing dancers for college or preparing them for a career?
you have to know for sure what you want out of the program, so you have a clear plan and path (this solidity will come in handy when the job search comes around and suddenly everything’s up in the air!). the path to professionalism is long and difficult, and you really have to be driven and focused. it’s extremely easy to get distracted, but no matter what i urge you to keep your eye on the prize, and brush off anything bad that comes your way. persistence is key! ask any professional about their path, and i guarantee there were setbacks for everyone. it’s overcoming these difficult obstacles that shapes us artistically, and gives us motivation to keep moving forward! xxPS, i also really suggest looking for a program that has emphasis on dance as opposed to academics. i know this sounds strange, but in order to become a ballerina (this doesn’t apply to all dancers or all types of dance, since there are always exceptions) you really have to have all the focus be on your career. this is sometimes difficult, especially to discuss with parents, because to be honest our careers usually start immediately after high school ends, giving us little or no time to go to college straight away. the upside is that now there are great online programs that have flexible schedules so you can still get a degree while dancing professionally, and some companies even offer programs for dancers that are affiliated with colleges so the dancers can take evening classes or classes in between rehearsals and still get a college education while working. some dancers also just prefer to attend college after their career is over, and some don’t attend at all. it’s personal preference of course, but i just want to make sure you know this! all the best, and if you need any more help don’t hesitate to ask! xx
Hey friend! I'm happy that you happy xx
Glad to know I make you happy friend! The sun is out and that always helps
Damn that's a cool middle name. How about Houndstooth for you? it's a lottle crap but it's a hella cool pattern
That a very cool pattern indeed. I have a coat with that pattern!
Houndstooth... I like the sound of that. Adds a little edginess to my name. My official initials will be AHA, though. Ah well, why not.
