THE CIRCLE (2017) Tirée du roman éponyme de Dave Eggers, la production made in NETFLIX (décidément parout) THE CIRCLE nous plonge au cœur d’un réseau social ultime, dressant son portrait à travers le personnage de Mae, ici incarnée par la célèbre Emma Watson. Film d’anticipation se voulant dystopique tout comme le livre via une pléthore de thématiques inhérentes à ce genre d’entreprise -surveillance vidéo omniprésente, relations amicales détruites, manipulation à grande échelle-, THE CIRCLE tente de mettre en évidence la confrontation entre la notion d’humanité et celle de la technologie destinée à la préserver. On se situe donc assez loin d’un THE SOCIAL NETWORK (2012) qui adoptait un ton (auto?)biographique. Pourvu d’un cast de qualité (Tom Hanks et John Boyega -trop en retrait- par exemple) et d’une réalisation à gros budget, le film tient bon par le jeu d’Emma Watson, diffusant une candeur qui évoluera en plusieurs phases au fil de l’histoire. Hélas, à vouloir trop en montrer, THE CIRCLE n’en montre finalement pas assez, s’attardant sur l’apparence plus que sur les faits: en effet, nombre de questions seront abordées mais ne trouveront pas de réponse tangible ou satisfaisante, l’énormité du sujet tenant sur 1h50. De ce parti pris engagé et dénonciateur, on reste sur sa faim malgré une qualité narrative nous apportant quelques twists, osons le dire, plutôt académiques même si assez pertinents. Certes, THE CIRCLE est bien filmé, pourvu d’un OST approprié -bien que trop formaté-, et ses acteurs jouent bien, mais il manque cruellement de profondeur, laissant stagner certains sujets jusqu’à l’oubli de sa principale question: c’est bien, ou pas? Car la seule réponse que nous donne le réalisateur James Ponsoldt est: “ça dépend qui tient les rênes”, se désistant ainsi de toute responsabilité envers le spectateur, faute grave pour une oeuvre qui se veut critique. Vous l’aurez compris, ce “cercle” n’est pas le renouveau de l’héritage du sacré 1984 (1984) de Michael Radford mais, peut-être, une très timide préquelle. Loupant son statut de film culte à cause d’un traitement trop sage -quel devenir pour tous ces intéressants protagonistes et cette société?-, THE CIRCLE est une piqûre de rappel minime, mais pas une vraie leçon de morale indiscutable telle que le fût OKJA (2017).
