Taking Time to Pick the Clovers
Adjusting to living outside of the hustle and bustle of the bakery has been challenging. As an admitted workaholic, and proud of it, I knew I would hate leaving the home I've raised my children in over the past several years. There are so many memories there. Whether good or bad, they are the fabric of our lives. What I knew I would hate most would be the commute. I'm a professional procrastinator. So traffic for me always poses a big problem in the scheme of my day. Of all the things I knew I would hate, there is so much I never anticipated loving.
To start, it has been refreshing to have a start and end time to my day. As many of your know we are closing at 4pm and because I now leave the bakery when we are closed I get an opportunity to spend time that I never knew existed. I've enjoyed getting to know my new neighbors who have been just as welcoming as the ones who've been like family in Germantown. They are proud to welcome us to their neck of the woods and that makes it alittle easier to be transitioning here. Secondly, along the commute I've had the opportunity to see the change that in the recent past I had been so disconnected from. Living and working in the same place for the kind of hours I work often means you miss the fact that an entire building was torn down and erected on west end ave or even on the next block. But my third joy takes the cupcake, and spawned my writing to you today. Meeting new people with a genuine joy that oozes from them makes me just want to be better, do more.
That said, this is the story of when I met Allison. When we walked into the neighborhood Pizza Hut she was so excited to see "her happy little cupcake bakers," as she announced us with a wide mouthed grin. Her eyes were practically sparkling.Mind you, I've never met this lady a day into life, but my husband and son had. Because they were donning cupcake shirts on their first visit, she'd decided she needed to know more about this place, these folks. She googled and became inspired by what she learned of this Cupcake Collection.
Allison's energy uplifted my sleepy Sunday afternoon slump. As we were leaving, she handed me my receipt. On the back, she had taped two fourleaf clovers. " Here's a couple clovers for you." she said smiling. Wow, I thought. One of our team members was just fumbling through the field last week looking to stumble, perhaps, on just one. And here I am gifted with two. "Two for me?" I was pleasantly surprised. "Yea," she said. "I’m not sure what jt is about me, but I find them all the time. I found 14 of them on my way to work this morning," she said dumping an envelope full of them on the counter. Each one had been carefully taped to a small sheet of paper about the size of a coin. There were big ones and small ones. All prepared to send off with unsuspecting customers like me and in hopes of sprinkling their day with a little hope and joy.
Surely her name was on the employee of the month plaque to my right. Of course!! She was Ms February and Ms October. More than that, she etched her name into my heart. I don't think I'll likely be forgetting Ms Allison anytime soon. How could I? I'm feeling too blessed and my heart is grinning from the inside. And that as we know is the definition of true joy.
