who: open where: anywhere
“you know- that wasn’t what i was expecting...” ophelia’s head tilted to the side for a moment, contemplating the scene before her. “and yet-” she grinned, lips curling in an almost cruel manner. “i’m not surprised.”
The Doom 2021 Solo Show: The Doom Installation View ART FRONT GALLERY, Tokyo, Japan Mixed Media Photo: Masanobu Nishino This work was created and presented as a counterpart to the work, “The Pale Horse”, which was shown in the solo exhibition at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa. In this work, a room with exactly the same interior as the hut in “The Pale Horse” has been created, but instead of a painting of the pale horse, a life-size three-dimensional figure of a pale horse has been installed and is stuck into the dining table as if it were a 3-D bug. The room narrows as one goes deeper into the room, and the floor and ceiling are also gently sloped. The exhibition room faces the street, and the street side is made of glass so that the interior can be seen from the street, but the narrower back of the room creates a visual illusion, making the horse appears larger than it actually is when viewed from the street. The viewers can also enter the room, but it is difficult to notice the gentle slope of the floor when viewed from the street, and they physically feel the slope only when they enter the room. This causes a discrepancy between visual and physical information, and the viewers feel uncomfortable and uneasy due to physical instability and the reversal phenomenon of becoming the ones viewed from the street, i.e., becoming a part of the installation, by entering the room. A series of oil paintings and small three-dimensional works dealing with “The Pale Horse” were also exhibited in a separate gallery room at the exhibition.
