my husband just said the cutest headcanon: peeta painting katniss’s nails after the war

current headcanon that will not get out of my head: the toast babies growing up and realizing that 'real or not real' isn't a normal game that everyone plays with their parents. 

and like, at first, they don't understand how it is weird. their mama always acted like it was a fun game. and all of the time it has happened, the three of them will just hug their papa tight and confirm how real their love is for him. and how he is safe. and how strange can that be?

but the more they think about it, it does seem a little confusing. the way that their papa's eyes always look so scared. and his strained smile when each of the toasties hug his calves. or the way that their mama hugs their papa like he was hurt. like she was trying to make him feel better. or the strange look on her face when she turns to see the toasties giggling, trying to join in the game. the way that her face quickly changed from concern to smile. allowing them to join in a few 'reals' and then asking them to go outside to play because papa is tired. 

like, i am sure that katniss and peeta tried really hard that their children didn't see them in their worst moments, but it would have been impossible to hide everything. and then they would have to roll with it. and, surprisingly, it comes pretty easy for katniss. because she has had plenty of practice masking her emotions for an audience.

gosh. so like, maybe this is not new, but my favorite headcannon is that peeta is only like mid-handsome. like, if gale is a tall, dark, and handsome 11 out of 10, peeta is maybe a... 7. maybe an 8 with his hair done up?

and it makes it so that when katniss is making out with gale in district two, she is essentially making out with a model. but her heart isn't into it because all she is thinking about is peeta. like to anyone else, it would be a dream. but gale is not her mid-looking peeta, so she doesn't care.

and i am imagining after the war that peeta says some passing remark about how he was never one of the good-looking guys in school. and then katniss is like, "excuse me?" and then peeta is like, "you know. like, i was never one of the hot guys. y'know, like gale." and then katniss walks over and shows him just how hot she thinks he is.
