In spite of everything, after having slept two days on the matter, Ezekiel had remained unconvinced. It seemed so wrong, to know what was going on behind the scenes and yet stand idly by, awaiting some sort of miracle, or for the people to reach such an urgent point of desperation that they were forced to lead an uprising themselves. The thought made Ezekiel feel complicate in their murder. Nothing about it was palatable.
He planned on approaching the matter from a theological perspective, to use the angle of Uther’s newfound faith to get the point across. Maybe then he’d have more of a chance - it was why the King had brought him after all, to be spokesperson on such matters. Even he couldn’t argue with that.
Okay. Breathe in, breathe out.
Holding his head high as the double doors swung open, Ezekiel entered the room, managing to maintain a neutral energy in spite of the underlying fear. His eyes lingered on the Prince for a brief moment, having not expected to see him here. But no matter. Given their prior conversation, Ezekiel had become resigned to the fact that he’d likely have to do this alone. He’d be lying if he said he wasn’t scared, but he wasn’t going to try and drag the Prince in against his will. No. He was here of his own accord and would insistently contest as such if it came to it.
It’s alright, Arthur, he thought as his gaze flickered momentarily upon the Prince. Anything that happens today is on my head and mine alone. You’re safe.
“Your Majesty. Your Highness,” a formal address accompanied by a low bow. “Forgive my intrusion but I must speak with his Majesty as a matter of urgency.” And with that, he spread out the black fabric of his cassock in a neat square before him as he lowered to kneel before the two royals - holy, humble, dignified. Above all, though; passive. Non-aggressive, a gesture of vulnerability.
“You have expressed on many occasions your wish to be a good Christian King, Your Majesty, upon which you have brought me here to advise you. It is for that very reason that I have come to you today; out of duty to you, and in honour of your request to me.” Those sharp, blue eyes, directed humbly towards the floor, now moved to make direct contact with King’s.
“Your Majesty, are you aware that murder is among the most grievous of Cardinal Sins?”
