Overview/thoughts: This book is really "enchanting." I've never read anything like this and it took me by surprise. It's dark and has really strong subject matter (abuse, rape, and unspeakable acts). You're hearing the story from a man (he's not named until the end and his name is a spoiler) on death row who "sees" things. When I say that, I mean that even though he is in a cell 24 hours daily, he "knows" what's going on with certain people in the prison and he even knows what they are feeling and thinking. It is never explained if he has psychic abilities or if he is just crazy. He sees "enchanting" things too (horses that run around and leave dust after executions, little men with hammers that laugh, and 'flibby gibbets' that eat the ashes of the dead prisoners.... yeah maybe crazy) There is stories of different people in the prison and most of the stories are heartbreaking. 90% of this book was just full of bad luck, sadness, despair and men trying to get off of death row... I think it was really just showing how terrible our main character felt. I liked how that all came together.
What I liked: What made me really like this book is even though this man did awful things... you kind of feel sorry for him. I liked him and wanted him to live. He loved books and he cared about people... I was just torn because he did such a bad thing.. how could I like him?
What I dislike: The story didn’t go anywhere except in circles. There was a couple of instances where you got a good story line but then it just ended or the subject changed for awhile. Some of the characters fell flat. The ending sucked so much for me even though I knew it would happen.
Note: This cover is amazing and I love the horses (perfect for the book).. PLUS this cover will completely confuse you.
