Colorado Senator Cory Gardner on Monday, December 17, 2018, introduced an amendment to the criminal justice reform bill being debated in Congress. The First Step Act, which would amend the federal Controlled Substances Act so states, Washington DC, territories and tribes are protected from federal law enforcement if their marijuana rules and actions are in line with state or tribal laws. At first glance this bill looked like it could help, but there is a bunch of stuff buried in it. All it does is feed into the prison industrial complex. I agree that we need prison reform, but this bill, while it may seem like a good thing, will not help the prisoners as much as it would the businesses that are benefiting from cheap labor. POTENTIAL TO EXACERBATE RACIAL AND SOCIOECONOMIC DISPARITIES IN THE PRISON SYSTEM Opponents of the Act argue that the “Risk Assessment System” (to be developed by the Attorney General) will rely heavily on factors that correlate closely with socioeconomic status and race. This could create racial and class disparities in how prisoners’ risk level is assessed, and thus which prisoners can participate in rehabilitative programs and which prisoners can cash in their credits for early release. Another major problem is This bill also needs to include sentencing reform. #theFIRSTSTEPAct does not reform, reduce or eliminate mandatory minimums. A personal mission; prison reform vs criminal justice reform

My Mission

Many years ago, when my (now deceased) son was incarcerated, I knew next to nothing about criminal justice policies, rates of incarceration, or racial disparities in sentencing.
